A.S.K.O CLEANS UP !!
Article written by Kevina Malone
Tallaght Basketball Arena was the venue for the 5th Irish cup. A.S.K.O went along with 35 students including Pee-Wees, Cadets, Juniors and Adults. It was a great day for the students as they managed to take a total of 28 awards home with them. The tournament kicked off at 12.00 noon with the pee-wee and Cadet sections. The fights were for 2 mins and it was first to 3 points. The pee-wees were not allowed face contact. This meant that the fighters had to fight fast and get in first. We had a number of fighters entered in these sections, A. Quinn, R. Bhamjee, Y. Coffee, L. Martin, Z.Holly, S.Kenny, L.Kenny, Daryl Tallant, D. Tallant, M.Crofton, more names to be put in. They all fought with great determination and confidence. They eventually managed to secure one 1st, two 2nds and two 3rds. These sections were broken down into age and belts. The standard was excellent in fighting and kata.
Next up were the juniors, the most difficult thing they found was the non contact to the face and first up to 3 scores. We had D.Duffy, S.Brennan, S.Blades, Eoin, This section was hotly contested with Dennis, Shay and Eoin taking 3rd and two 4ths in their sections. Junior girls didn’t let the side down A.Caren, H.Acton, L.Acton and Fiona was entered. It was Fiona’s first competition and did herself proud. The three girls entered the Team Kata event and came away with 3rd place, Hazel also got 4th place in her sparring section.
The ladies and men’s section unfortunately was held back till very late in the evening but the awards didn’t stop there. Phillip and Colin managed to take 1st and 2nd in the sparring section and Colin also secured 3rd in his Kata section. Tim Kenny who only came back from being injured managed to take 2nd in sparring and 3rd in his kata section. Gavin and Chris’s were unlucky to not have progressed further. The ladies also had good rewards we had a good number of ladies entered in the respective sections. H.Geelan, G.Napier, C.Reed, C.Condon, A.Weinmann and K.Malone. Ciara unfortunately was just piped at the post and went out in the first round.
First up were Hillary and Jennifer, They fought very well and Hillary secured 1st place. In kata they managed to take 3rd and 4th. Colette took 4th in her kata section which was a tough section. Anneline entered both the brown belt section and the black belt sparring section she managed to take 2nd in the brown belt and 3rd in the black belt (middle weight). She also took 2nd in her kata section. Kevina secured 2nd in sparring (light weight) and 3rd in kata. The team event came very late into the evening around 11.30pm the Americans had two teams entered and Anneline and Kevina joined another 3 ladies to make an Irish team. They went on to beat the Americans and took first place.
The students did exceptionally well and A.S.K.O is very proud of them not just the people who took home awards, also the students who didn’t because they showed great sportsmanship and respect and enthusiasm as it was a very long day the last fight finishing at 11.45pm. The overall competition was very well run and the standard was very good. Well done again to everyone who took part.
