RESULT:- Avondale/North Wicklow won by 6 wickets

Match Report by Johnny Fitzsimons

North Wicklow/Avondale took on Merrion III in potentially the last match of the season at Oakhill on Sat. 12/09/09.
The news from the toss was that we were to field first. We took the field initially with 9 men but  thankfully Usman responded to a late call up which at least took the numbers to 10 for the day.
After a week of decent weather with no rain and a bit of sunshine the pitch had transformed from a track that favoured the bowlers to a lovely batting track. It soon became obvious that bowling was going to be hard work. Anything loose was punished and a beautifully prepared outfield meant anything that beat the outfield pretty much made the trek to the boundary. The Merrion batsmen attacked from the outset and runs flowed freely. It took some excellent work in the field from Usman Ghani to stem the flow. Two direct hits saw him run out two Merrion batsmen who were really taking the attack to the North Wicklow bowlers. The skipper bowled a very good spell in conjunction with Richard Bridge and we were able to restrict them to 235 in the 48th over. Could well have been more.
After the break Usman and Wiz opened up the innings and they both enjoyed the batting conditions going on to build a partnership of 70 odd before Usman was caught playing one of his customary expansive shots. David Drane came to the crease and continued the momentum in partnership with the skipper. They looked to be well in control until Drane was given out to a horrible lbw decision. At 2 for 160 odd there was still a bit of cricket left but the total was reached in the 46th over with the loss of just 2 more wickets.
Thanks go to Peter Saville for the use of his magnificent ground and facilities all year and to Sean Stanley for all his hard work preparing the pitches during another annoyingly wet summer.
One last game scheduled away to Clontarf on the last weekend in September so if the weather stays good maybe that will be played. If not, another enjoyable season for myself and will see you all next year.
