RESULT:- Avondale/North Wicklow won by 6 wickets

Match Report by Johnny Fitzsimons

On Sat 29/08/09 North Wicklow/Avondale 1sts made the trek up to Balrothery to take on North County 3rds.
The news from the toss was that we were to field first.
In the abscence of Bridger, Chris Cohen and David Drane took the new ball and Chris soon set about the business of removing the top order. In an excellent opening spell he had the ball 'kissing'(in the words of gus) the surface of the North County mat and doing just enough to catch the edge of the bat on three occasions into the eager hands of the catchers behind the wicket.
With the change bowlers coming on we continued to take wickets regularly and also leaked a few boundaries but remained pretty much in control having them 6 for 70 odd and then 8 for 100.An excellent 10th wicket partnership from a couple of promising juniors then frustrated us for a while until the last wicket was taken in the 41st over with the total to chase 163.
After tea,Tom Madigan and Nikki Fusco strode to the crease with the team quietly confident of chasing the runs. The start was very watchful from the opening pair with North county bowling fairly tight lines and when Fusco edged one to the keeper Drano soon followed in the same fashion leaving us 2 wickets down for 30 odd.
We made the North County bowlers work very hard for their third wicket as Madigan(31)and Fitzsimons(96 not out) went on to add over 100 runs in partnership, in the process batting North County out of the game.
We lost a couple of late wickets but went on to hit the winning runs in the 44th over with 6 wickets in hand.
