RESULT:- Avondale/NWCC I won by 87 runs

Report by Johnny Fitzsimons
After slipping down to 4th on the league ladder North Wicklow/Avondale took on Phoenix II needing a big finish to the season to secure a place in the top two.
With the skipper on holidays, David Drane took up the responsibility of leading the team. His tenure started well winning the toss and electing to bat. The North Wicklow innings was very quickly in turmoil as the top order crumbled and after 8 overs Phoenix were in a commanding position taking 4 wickets for only 11 runs. An excellent rearguard action from David Drane and Johnny Joyce saved embarassment and steered us to drinks with four wickets down.
Johnny finally succumbed to the Phoenix bowlers and Gus Hancock soon followed leaving us again in a fairly precarious position in the 30th over with 6 wickets down for 100 odd runs.Enter Nikki Fusco(58 not out) who, after working very hard in the nets on a few little technical issues with his batting, played a lovely innings defending well and taking advantage of the loose balls. Alongside the skipper, who made an excellent 88 they steered us to a very competitive total of 209 after 50 overs.A mention should also go to Richard Bridge(17)with some good late over hitting after the skipper's departure. At tea the overall feeling was that we had dodged a bullet after such a poor start and we were optimistic of defending our total.
For a change, after the tea break we started well with the ball with Bridge taking advantage of a stiff breeze at his back and the skipper Drano bowling an excellent accurate spell into the teeth of a gale and after the first 12 overs we had seemingly bowled them out of the match having them 5 wickets down for 40 runs. After some resistance from their middle order and a couple of late wickets from Fusco we bowled them out in the 36th over for 122.Bridger continuing his fine form with the ball ending up with figures of 4/27 after his bag of 5 last week.
So,a good win leading into an away game this weekend to North county
