I set out
below "A Player's Summary"
of the rules changes, which was
provided by the Umpires at their meeting on Tuesday 27th March at CYMS.
The umpires went through each paragraph of the changes and answered
questions. They talked
mainly about how they intend to apply the new laws - i.e. in the
senior competitions.
The laws of the game (2000 Code) are available in a small blue book
for £5. There is also a bigger book for £10, which book states and
interprets them.

IF YOU WANT EITHER OF THESE BOOKS.
The Junior Branch have now written to us with their directions.
I set these out in violet
at the appropriate places.
They have said nothing about captains furnishing match reports so
presumably they are not called for.

Irish Association of Cricket
Umpires & Scorers - A Player's Summary of Changes in The Laws of
Cricket - 2000 Code |
|
This is a very brief summary of the
main changes as they affect players. Competition regulations and
Union bye-laws may supercede parts of the laws of Cricket.
(From Web Author - this summary may be amended) |
Before Play- Captains should be aware of The Spirit
of Cricket, the preamble to the laws, and ensure that they
and their players conduct themselves according to it.
- Before the
toss the players must be nominated in writing to an
umpire.In LCU Junior matches, if
no official umpire is standing, this should be seen as a
recommendation rather than a law.
- The toss will take
place not sooner than 30 minutes and not later than 15 minutes before
the start.
- Match balls must be given to the umpires before the toss.
- No practice on the square later than 30 minutes before
the start until after the close of play. No practice is allowed on
the pitch or an adjacent strip on any day of the match
-
penalty five-over suspension.
Two scorers shall
be appointed.Boundary - The inner edge of
the boundary marking is the boundary. A sightcreen will always be
outside the boundary.
During Play
- The Ball - must be returned to umpire at fall of wicket,
intervals and interruptions. The ball may be dried only on a towel
(not sawdust); mud must be removed under the supervision of the
umpire; the ball may not be rubbed on the ground.
- A bowler arriving 15 minutes or more after the start
of a match must wait the same amount of playing time before bowling.
- The Pitch - The Protected Area of the pitch
begins five feet from popping crease. Fielders and
batsmen must not cause avoidable damage to the pitch,
nor beat the pitch with the bat.
- A short-pitched delivery that goes above head-height
of the striker standing upright is a no ball.
- Any delivery other than a slow one, which passes on
the full above waist height, is deemed to be dangerous
and unfair and is a no ball. A slow delivery which
passes on the full above shoulder height of the striker
standing upright is deemed to be dangerous and unfair and is a no ball.
- A ball that bounces more than twice or rolls along the ground
before being played or reaching the popping crease is a no ball; as is
a ball that stops before reaching the striker's wicket (if not
reached first) - no 'free hit'.
- Penalty of no ball or wide always stands in addition
to any other runs scored.
