NWCC 1sts v. Laois 1sts at TRR, Sat. 26^th May 2007, Senior 3 League
Laois won the toss and batted. Richard Bridge opened our bowling and struck immediately, his extra bounce off a good length finding an edge and Ian Gibson taking the catch superbly with a dive low to his right at slip. Backed by tight probing bowling by Ian himself, Richard continued to trouble Laois and claimed a second wicket with a caught and bowled. Patrick McMahon took a catch in the deep off Ian's bowling to leave Laois looking uncomfortable at 44 for 3. Laois then dug in and our bowling lost its zip. A period of intense cricket in the middle was lightened at the boundary edge by a visiting lady hockey team from North Down who drank and chatted away. One of them danced a very creditable foxtrot with Laois's Ugandan Norman Batanda. (see photo) Bridge returned to end a stand of 83, ripping out Smit's stump. Relief was temporary as S. Lalor and Ozenbrook then put on 82. Eoin Dorgan joined Nicky Fusco in the attack and the spinners in tandem had some success. Eoin bowled Ozenbrook to leave Laois 199 for 5. Nicky had Batanda smartly stumped by Angus, revealing that his foxtrot down the track is not yet as good as on the boundary edge. Their linchpin Lalor was run out for 71 at 216 for 7. Hopes of containing the total within the last overs were dashed as Jazz and Cosby crashed another 60 runs, relishing pace more than spin. The Laois total of 278 looked formidable and their opening bowlers tied down John Fitsimons and Shane Brosnan. Oz could not make contact with anything outside off and then perished driving over one on his wicket. After 15 overs we were only 34 but Laois had then to use their change bowlers who were not up the mark. Runs came at 5 an over as Johnny in particular put away short loose deliveries to reach his 50. Damien Joyce had now played himself in and began to show his shots as well. There was nothing Laois could do to restrain Johny Fitz. He took the bowlers on and accelerated, advancing down the track to score off most balls and playing his wonderful trade mark on drive. His century came and was quicky followed by Damien's fifty. Their stand had realised 218 and victory was in sight with plenty of overs to spare when Johny was caught on the wide mid on boundary for 148. It was in fact an excellent running diving catch by Cosby. Angus attacked from the start and he and Damien had almost brought up home before both perished with aggressive strokes. This was a fine victory and Damien and Johnny showed the value of patiently playing good bowling on its merits and then going after poor change bowling. It must be said that the umpires helped too as most of our innings was played in cold rain and they could have ended the game (a draw) at any point due to the miserable conditions or light.
