Report by Johnny Fizsimons On a glorious bank holiday Monday in Malahide the North Wicklow first IX had a good win by five wickets. North Wicklow won the toss and decided to bowl mainly because it worked last week and if it ain’t broke don't fix it. After the first couple of overs, it was obvious that it was a typical early season wicket - slow and low coupled with a still soft outfield. It was also evident that boundaries would be hard to come by and the batsmen would have to work for their runs. Malahide got off to a good start and were set to compile a good score at 0/50 from 15 overs. Soon after their batsmen tried to force things and we started to take wickets at regular intervals. Some good tight bowling in the middle overs and towards the end restricted the Malahide total to 7/169 after the full 50 overs. The pick of the bowlers were Cohen and Fitzsimons who kept things tight and controlled during the middle section of the innings. The ground fielding was also very good throughout the whole innings. The run chased started well and some good partnerships saw that the total was reached comfortably in the 37th over. Pick of the batsmen was Damian Joyce who ended up unbeaten on 65 and after a watchful start found the boundary regularly to snuff out any hope for the opposition. A good confidence building win.

RESULT:- North Wicklow lost by 58 runs
Report by John Fitzsimons North Wicklow won the toss and decided to bowl on a track in 3 rock which after a week of good sunny dry weather had become a very good place to bat after a month or so of very bowler friendly conditions. Merrion proceeded to pile on runs at will due to some good batting and sub standard bowling and ground fielding. Half an hour of so was lost trying to retrieve cricket balls from all parts of the golf course and hockey pitch after the North Wicklow bowlers served up a succession of "free hits". Good luck more than good management saw us finish our overs within the allotted time but not before Merrion had posted a massive total of 295. Richard Bridge was the only bowler who would bother to glance at his figures and ended up with 3 wickets and an economy rate of under 4 runs per over. Heads were certainly down at tea as we prepared ourselves for a serious run chase. As it happens our top order performed very well and and at drinks we were still in the race with the loss of only two wickets and a healthy run rate. After drinks we actually accelerated due to some good hitting combined with some friendly Merrion bowling. So much so, that after 40 overs we were excellently placed at 3/225 needing roughly a run a ball to reach the Merrion total. The turning point came when we lost Preet Singh lbw and after that our middle order and tail offered little or no resistance and we proceeded to lose our last seven wickets for 12 runs within the space of four overs. Notable contributions with the bat came from Fitzsimons (94) Joyce (39) and Hancock (42) In the end a good, spirited run chase giving ourselves every chance of an unlikely victory until the afore mentioned dramatic late batting collapse. The reality being the bowlers and fielding left the batsmen too much to do.                                 Plenty to work on for next week when we face Leinster at home.

Match Report by John Fitzsimons North Wicklow won the toss and decided to bat on a typical batsman friendly track with an outfield that resembled green carpet. The North Wicklow innings started well and after 20 overs we were well placed at 2/105. Unfortunately, with the loss of a couple of wickets either side of the drinks break, the run rate stalled through the middle overs and a score of below 200 looked likely until some good late hitting by Nikki Fusco took us to a total after 50 overs of 218. By no means an imposing score in Leinster but we had at least given ourselves a fighting chance if we bowled well. After 15 overs we were in the drivers seat having Leinster 4 wickets down for 50 after an excellent opening spell from Preet Singh and we certainly had a strong sniff of victory. From that point on though, it was all Leinster and with some good middle order batting seemingly cantered to victory in the 41st over. This now places North Wicklow in the position of two wins and three losses for the season and some improving to do to to boost their percentage.
