NWCC 2nds v. Old Belvedere 4 at 3 Rock Rovers, Monday 7th May 07

North Wicklow 2 played Old Belvedere 4 in Three Rock Rovers on an overcast Bank Holiday Monday 7th May. The weather took its toll before the match began with a reduction to 35 overs a side being agreed by the captains. Old Belvedere won the toss and batted. North Wicklow bowled well with wickets falling at regular intervals and distibuted among all the bowlers. The pick of the bowlers were Dave Griffen with 2 for 18 off his 9 overs, maintaining an enviable consistency of only conceding 18 runs in each of his first three matches, and Phil Henshaw, with 3 for 33 off his 9 overs. Dougie Ffrench-Mullen also chipped in with 2 for 33. North Wicklow's fielding wasn't as good as its bowling which allowed one of the Old Belvedere opening bats to reach 75, which was by far the highest score in their total of 142.
North Wicklow began the run chase well with Patrick McMahon and Richard Bridge putting on almost 80 for the first wicket. Richard Bridge played well with some expansive shots before being caught, as usual, for 57. Tommy Madigan then came in and continued the speedy scoring rate with 44 not out to see North Wicklow home with 7 wickets and 8 overs to spare. The individual batting and bowling performances were very good but there is a lot of work to be done on our fielding.

RESULT: - North Wicklow 2 won by 7 wickets  (Match reduced to 35 overs each due to rain)

Return to 2nd X1 Team News Page

NWCC 2nds v. Railway Union 4 at the Park Avenue, Sat. 12th May 07

North Wicklow 2 played Railway Union 4, one of the other team's promoted from Junior B last year, in Park Avenue on Saturday 12th May. North Wicklow won the toss and in true North Wicklow tradition opted to bowl first. Railway Union began well with one of their openers going on to score a really classy 85. He never looked in much trouble until being excellently stumped by Patrick McMahon off a wide ball. North Wicklow's openers, Gary Joyce and Dave Griffen bowled good lines with Dave taking 2 wickets. The change bowlers, Dougie and Eoin also kept things tight with Eoin ending with figures of 5 wickets for 44 runs. Railway Union finished with 210 for 8 wickets from their 40 overs. This score reflected good fielding from North Wicklow which included 4 catches, a run out and a stumping.
North Wicklow began the chase at a good rate of 5 an over which created sufficient breathing space for wickets to fall during the innings. Patrick McMahon opened and scored an especially brisk 51. The speed of the 50 took the crowd by surprise as their applause required prompting! He was ably supported by Shane Brosnan with 44, who was then supported by Peter Crosse with 26. With North Wicklow looking comfortable at 160 for 4, a couple of quick wickets fell but Eoin Dorgan and Gary Joyce closed out the game, with 32 not out and 4 not out; Gary not being helped by Eoin hogging the strike! The result was a good win and was the opposite to the previous year where we had batted first, with our run rate being too slow. By batting second this year we could judge the required run rate and we achieved the target with relative ease after losing a couple of cheap wickets.

NWCC 2nds v. Wexford 2 at Three Rock, Sat. 19th May 07

North Wicklow Seconds played Wexford Wanderers in Three Rock Rovers on Saturday 19th May. Wexford won the toss and opted to bat first, putting up a total of 156 for 5 wickets off their 40 overs. North Wicklow bowled reasonably to restrict Wexford to such a score on a good batting pitch, although a number of bowling points were missed out on. Niall Cliffton had a particularly good time in the field taking a diving catch and running out one of the Wexford dangermen with a direct hit. North Wicklow openers Richard Bridge and John Fitzsimons quickly set about chasing the Wexford total with some fine attacking strokes. John Fitzsimons made a speedy 70 and Richard Bridge was caught out for 40 after hitting one too many balls in the air. North Wicklow achieved the total for 4 wickets in 26 overs after a small batting collapse.
The seconds now have a couple of weekends off until the Whelan Cup match on Tuesday 5 June and the next League game away to Knockharley on 9th June.

NWCC 2nds v. Railway Union 4 at Three Rock, Sat. 23rd June 07

We lost the toss and were given the opportunity to bowl first. Right from the start the bowling was excellent with Richard Bridge and Gary Joyce bowling quick and tight. They also managed to extract significant extra bounce out of the track which made life very difficult for Railway Union. Brian Hennessy then came into the attack for Richard Bridge and was also hitting the spot. Thanks to the efforts of our seamers Railway Union had only 31 runs from 17 overs. After drinks Railway Union upped the pace and achieved 132 for 9 off their 40 overs. All of the bowlers played a part in this excellent display and were assisted by sharp wicket keeping from Patrick McMahon who took 2 catches and a stumping.
In reply North Wicklow had a slight hiccup at the beginning of the chase with Patrick McMahon bowled for a duck off the impressive Noone, who also surprised Richard Bridge with extra bounce for the only other wicket to fall. Ozzie (44 not out) led the run chase with Declan Griffin assisting him with a 30 not out, which included some classy sweep and pull shots. Very impressive for a man only playing his 5th game of cricket! The highlight of his innings had to be the topedged six while fearlessly playing a hook shot. This was an excellent result especially for the bowlers although the Captain needs to work on his own fielding and placement of slips to ensure the bowlers get the full benefit from their efforts!
Hopefully we can use this result to push for promotion.
