A Plug-in is a small program that is used to extend another programs abilities in certain areas. For instance when you view pages on the Internet with Sound or Video content, its not actually your browser that is playing the sound or video, but a plug-in. When a page with music content is loading (after a brief pause) it instructs the browser to 'load' the plug-in . In some cases if your machine does not have the required plug you are redirected to the companies website to download the file.
Plug-ins come in many shapes and sizes, there are thousends available in the industry for just about every conceivable function and practice. For example a Graphic Artist can use a Visual FX plug-in to add a scratched, blur or even fire effect to a photo if needed, or a Sound Designer could use an Audio plug-in to remove hiss from a bad recording, or put it back in for that matter.
