Homework & Study

The learning process is a continuous one, and homework is assigned to assist this process. It is an integral part or that process. Parents are asked to check their children's work regularly and sign their homework journals weekly. The journals remain school property and must be surrendered on request. For Junior cycle students, homework and study should normally occupy between two and three hours nightly, and seldom less than three hours for Senior students The job of educating young people is a joint venture - a shared task, but primarily the responsibility of Parents/Guardians. It is very important, then, that parents and guardians or all students come to parent-teacher meetings. Such meetings take pace annually affording an opportunity to discuss progress with teachers. Alternative arrangements are made for parents whose work commitments prevent them attending.

Homework Policy

  • Students are provided with homework journals to record their homework assignments.
  • This journal is signed weekly by parents and checked by Class Tutor.
  • On entering 1st Year, students are advised to spend roughly 1.5 hours per evening on written assignments and study - with a further 1.5 hours per week on Saturdays reviewing their week's progress. Second and Third Year students are advised to do 2-3 hours study per day.
  • Senior students receive detailed instruction by post in August alerting them to the importance of good study habits. A Study Plan is organised through the Career Guidance Office.
  • Evening study is available at the school from 4 - 6 p.m. (Mon. - Thurs).
  • Homework Monitoring is carried out each morning 8.40 a.m. to 9.10 a.m. to encourage completion of homework by all students.
  • Any student wishing to obtain a reference from the Principal must hand up their school homework journal. A well-organised homework journal is a good reflection on the work ethic of any student.
