Following the failure of the 1848 (Young Ireland) Rising in Ballingarry, County Tipperary, the Irish patriot William Smith O’Brien was convicted of treason and sentenced to death. A petition was collected to gain clemency for the rebel leader. As a consequence, his sentence was commuted to life-long penal servitude in Australia. He served five years in Tasmania, and was then released on condition that he did not return to Ireland. Two years later, he was pardoned and returned to Ireland.

The petition was collected in the winter of 1848/49 and comprised 166 separate petitions with a total of approx. 80,000 signatures. The document was sent to the Earl of Clarendon (Lord Lieutenant General and General Governor of Ireland). The petition is now held in the National Archives, reference CRF 1848 0 16/2; the component petitions are referenced 16/2/001 to 16/2/166 inclusive.

A searchable CD was compiled and edited by Ruth Lawler, and published by Eneclann Ltd. as Irish Records Index Vol. 2 "The 1848 Petitions" (2001). We are grateful to Eneclann for permission to copy the following transcripts from the CD. In view of the bulk and fragility of the petitions, the transcripts were not checked against the original document.
