A national census was taken in 1851. The original records were accidentally destroyed by fire, but the heads of household for Dublin City were indexed by Dr. David A. Chart (1878-1960) and survived. The index fills two bound volumes which are held in the National Archives, reference CEN 1851/18/1-2, shelf 2/436/31.
A searchable CD was compiled and edited by Seán Magee, and published by Enneclann Ltd. as Irish Records Index Vol. 3 "The 1851 Dublin City Census" (2001). The following transcripts used the CD as a basis, but the records were subsequently checked against Dr. Chart's original hardcopy index in the National Archives.
