The first weekly payment under the Old Age Pension Act (1908) was made at all the post offices in Ireland on New Year’s Day 1909.
The five shillings pension (ten shillings per couple) was granted to all citizens who could prove that they were seventy years of age.
Where baptismal records could not be found, claimants could substantiate their age by requesting a search of the 1841 and 1851 national
census returns (destroyed by accidental fire in 1922).
Applicants sent their requests directly to the Public Register Office in Dublin where the staff extracted the information from the census
returns. The request forms contain the names of the applicant's parents, and their address (defined by townland, civil parish, barony and
county) at the time of the census. If the search was unsuccessful, the form was simply marked "not found". If the search was successful, the
form was often annotated with details of the applicant's parents and siblings.
The "Census Search Forms" (1908-1922) are lodged in the National Archives, and the following extracts relate to individuals
