The Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Stories is an annual prize awarded by the University of Georgia, and is named in honour of Mary Flannery O’Connor (1925 – 1964). A brief biography is given in the Hall of Fame.

This prestigious award was established in 1982 to encourage young writers by bringing their work to the attention of readers and reviewers, and has since become a significant proving ground for newcomers. The award is a showcase for the talent and promise that has brought about a resurgence in the short story, as well as a testimony to the vitality of the genre.
