IRISH SCHOOLS REPORT
by J.O’Donoghue

Schools International, Dublin 1999
It was the turn of the ISTTA to organise this event in 1999 and overall it was a successful event. On the table Eoin Byrne and Linda Mountjoy won the under 18 boys and girls respectively. In the under 18 girls Ireland won the team event.

On the organisation side the late arrival of the Welsh team put the time schedule into disarray. Our thanks goes to everyone who helped to sort the situation out, especially Pat Conneely. some teams were not happy about the changes but I stand by the necessity of making them even if the Welsh might not have done the same for us.

Still lessons were learned, I hope and those who organised this event the next time will benefit from these mistakes.

Primary Schools, Cardiff 2000
The Irish boys team won a silver medal in this event but the girls team finished fourth. It was a good experience for the players and three of the girls are eligible for this event next year. Chris O'Brien was unbeaten in the team event matches. In the individuals Stephen Keenan reached the Semi-finals which was an excellent result.

World Schools, Beuvry 2000
This is another very good event for giving valuable experience to players. The team of Colin Byrne, Dane Smith, Sean Brady and David McNeill did their best in difficult circumstances with China and Brazil in their group. My thanks goes to Richard butler who organised the Irish Schools team travel and accommodation as well as going with them as NPC. The North Mon and St.Angela’s from cork were our Champion Schools Representatives.

Conclusion
The Schools International is taking place in the Isle of Man and this is the first season that there will be teams of two in the event.

The Schools All-Ireland Champions were once again from Cork with North Mon taking the Under 15 and Under 19 titles and Colaiste Choilm taking the Under 13 title in the Boys Section. St.Angela’s won the three titles in the Girls Section.
