The Universities affiliated to the Association through IUTT for 1999/2000 were Dublin University; University College, Cork; University College, Dublin; The Queen’s University of Belfast and The University of Ulster, Jordanstown. Dublin City University and Royal College of surgeons also took part in the championships.
The possibility of extending membership to the various Colleges and IT’s is being
considered, however no conclusion has been reached due to the ramifications of this move on
the timetable and facilities required to host the event.
Irish Universities Championships 2000.
The event this year took place in Cork, under the auspices of UCC, from 17 - 19 February. Men’s Team champions and winners of the Hubert Wine Cup were UCD, taking the title for
the first time since 1992, beating QUB (11-4), who were going for their sixth championship in a row, in the final. QUB took the Ladies Team title, for the third time in four years, beating UCC (8-7) in the final. In the Individual event, neither of the reigning champions were present to defend their titles, as both Brian Fitzgerald (DCU) and Brioni Lane (DCU) were away on international duty. In their absence, Neil Strong of QUB took the Mens title, beating Robby Engvall of UCD in the final, while in the ladies event, Jana Cairns of QUB put her name on the trophy once again, beating Aoife Walsh of UCC in the final.
Due to a number of cancellations of the Colours match between UCD and DU, the title was actually played for at the Intervarsities, with UCD taking the overall spoils for the fourth year in a row, and recorded a whitewash in the process winning the Mens 1sts (14-1), Ladies (9-6)and Mens 2nds matches (10-5).
A series of friendlies was played by DCU, against UCC, RCSI and TCD, although I don’t have the results of these matches.
As ever I would like to thank Tony Martin for his assistance with this event. I am sure we will need it even more next year as the Intervarsities return to his locality!
Best of luck to Dublin city university, who will be hosting the 2001 Intervarsities.
