The knowing self is distinct from the mind and all its modifications. (pg.240) What characterises the mind is the pairs of opposites. "The mind is not self-luminous, because it is cognizable." (Patanjali) That which is unchanging in the midst of the changeful must be different from it. What is not sublated must be the true self. "The modes of the mind are invariably known because its master, the intelligent self, is immutable." (Patanjali) YS IV.18.
