In the mid 80's, Sepultura (which is Portuguese for 'grave') was formed by the two
Cavalera brothers, Paulo Jr. and former guitarist Jairo T. They formed in Belo Horizonte,
Brazil, at a difficult time when the country was emerging from dictatorship. Their lyrics were in English from the very beginning and they were influenced by Metallica and Slayer, but took a more death metal edge. They went on to become the most successful band from Brazil or the 3rd world. After a show in London in 1996, frontman Max Cavalera left and later formed Soulfly, while current frontman Green replaced him, to somewhat faint reactions by fans. |
