MERVUE UNIT

Introduction

The Mervue Unit was established in 1978 with 12 members.   The current membership is in the region of 100 members, between the Senior and Cadet Units.  The Order of Malta Ambulance Corps, and indeed the Irish Association have a very long and interesting history of care down through the years.

The Unit provides first aid and ambulance cover for many

major events and sporting fixtures within the Galway

area, including horse racing, rugby fixtures and also local

martial arts tournaments, concerts and night courses.

The Cadet Unit is a youth organisation for 10 – 16 year

old boys and girls.  They assist the Senior Unit with

many of its activities and also participate in various

recreational activities, along with basic life saving skills,

light rescue and home nursing skills.  They demonstrate

those skills in competitions on both regional and national

 levels.

The members are trained in a wide variety of activities such as basic life saving skills, first aid, C.P.R., A.E.D., caring for the sick  and elderly, ambulance aid, footdrill and manual and patient handling.

The Mervue Unit has been supporting the local community down through the years.  We also run several basic first aid courses throughout the year.  We support local industries with our “First Class First Aid” training with occupational first aid courses as well as annual occupational inter-company fun competitions and major accident scenarios.

The Order of Malta is the largest organisation of its kind in Ireland and has over 150 units.  Activities are not just first aid and ambulance work but also include community care and youth work. New members are always welcome.  Senior members meet Wednesdays while the Cadet Unit meet on Saturdays.
