HISTORY
OF ATHENRY
Athenry Community Council Trust Limited
Established since l977, Athenry Community Council consists of a voluntary
body of people representative of every area in the parish. Responsible
for many significant developments such as playing fields and dressing rooms
for a range of sports, it also has many exciting ongoing projects including
Park Development, Community Bingo, The Heritage Centre and Community Lotto.
The present Council was elected in June 1993 for a three year term
and meets on the first Monday of every month.
To facilitate the smooth running of the Council the following committees
were put in place:-
Bingo Committee
This committee organises and runs weekly Bingo in the Athenry Community
Hall every Wednesday night. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated.
Property Committee
They oversee the Property of the Athenry Community Council Trust Ltd.
Finance Committee
The function of this committee is primarily the co-ordination of the
fund-raising projects and events.
Park Development
This sub-committee works with the aid of FÁS. This is now nearing
completion and a credit to the workers involved with the development of
it.
Tourism and Heritage
This committee boasts representation from a number of organisations
in the parish. Its aim is to promote Athenry’s heritage and tourism potential.
This group has achieved "Heritage Status" for Athenry.
Functions Committee
Visitors and teams are welcomed by this committee.
Lotto Committee
This committee recently launched the Athenry Community Council Lotto.
Envelopes are available in several retail outlets in the town and from
Community Council Representatives throughout the parish. The draw takes
place every Wednesday night and the support of the whole community would
be greatly appreciated.
