St. Mary’s Collegiate Church was formerly the parish church of Athenry. Built in the 1240s it became collegiate in 1484 by order of Bishop O’Murray of Tuam. In 1574 it was destroyed by the Earl of Clanricarde’s sons when they sacked the town. In 1828 the existing church with its  elegant spire was built in the ruins and was in use by the Church of Ireland until 1960.
