HISTORY
OF ATHENRY
Athenry Soccer Club
The Club was formed in 1970/1 and in 1976/7 they won their first trophy
- First Division League Champions.
They are the only team since in Co. Galway to win a league without
dropping a point. Team manager was Dessie Glynn. Captain was
Peter Gilhooley. Michael Kilkelly was top scorer with 26 goals.
During the league season they only used thirteen players. Training
took place in the Presentation Sports Field in Caheroyan with lights brought
across the road from Frank Glynn's house. Dressing rooms were four
cars on the side of the road. The main fund-raising was with the
St. Marys's Hurling Club in the local marquee.
Athenry are League Champions - First Division - 1976-77
Athenry won the Pierce Cup league this season and in doing so created
a record of being the unbeaten league champions in the three divisions.
It was a great distinction for this club who are only a few seasons in
local soccer. They are a comparatively young side and this augurs
well for their future.
Next season, by winning this league, they will be playing in the premier
league and with a little luck should give a good account of themselves.
Their leading scorer Michael Kilkelly (26 goals) is a player of exceptional
promise and make no doubt about it we will be hearing a lot about him next
season.
Team manager Des Glynn has been a great worker for the club since it
started and can take a lot of credit for this season's success.
Captain of the side is Peter Gilhooley who has been with the club since
its inception.
