Phoenix Park: The largest enclosed park in Europe. A large area of parkland in Dublin. It includes several large residences (including the President and American Ambassador), the ordinance survey, one or more hospitals, a zoo and lots more. To get there, take the number 10 bus or any one of several others, or drive. Events usually start in the Furry Glen near the South Western entrance or the Garda football pavilion - this is located off the main road through the park, opposite the zoo.
Pine Forest: Rockbrook, Co. Dublin. Reasonably typical of the forests around Dublin. It's quite a rough forest with plenty of paths. To get there, go to Rathfarnham in south county Dublin. At the Yellow House Pub, turn up the Willbrook road (R115) to Rockbrook. Once you get near the forest, there will be orienteering signs. Grid reference O 13 22.
Portlaw: Portlaw, Co. Waterford.
Portumna Forest Park: Portumna, Co. Galway. An excellent, undulating area of open forest on the shores of Lough Derg on the river Shannon. It was used for the 1996 IOC relays. To get there, go to Portumna and take the road, west, towards Woodford. The forest part is on the left a mile or two outside the village.
Poulgorm: Co. Kerry. This area consists almost entirely of complex open moorland. There is considerable contour and rock detail. The area is located just off the N22 (main Cork/Killarney road). Two days of the 1996 Shamrock O'Ringen will be based here. Grid reference W 046 790.
