Maps Starting with R

The Rabbit Warren: Fanore, Co. Clare. Small sand dune area.

Rahan: Somewhere in the Galtee Mountains.

Rathgaskig: Ballingeary, Co. Cork. This is mostly complex open moorland with some thick forest. To get there, take the N22 past Macroom and helf way to Ballyvourney. The turn-off should be signposted but it is also signposted for the "Toy Soldier Factory". Take the left here and continue straight following any O-signs. Grid reference W 16 17.

Ravens Glen: This area is also known as Glencree and the start is usually at Crone forest car park. The area is mixed forest and open mountain with plenty of rock and contour detail. To get there, Drive south from Enniskerry, following the signposts for Powerscourt Waterfall. Go past the entrance to the waterfall and the forest will be on the left. Grid reference O 19 14.

Ravens Rock: A nice area, covering Prince William's Seat and Knocknagun on the Dublin/Wicklow boarder. There are basically two possible starting points. To get there, drive from Enniskerry towards Glencree. The event will be signposted to the right, either a couple of miles from Enniskerry, or further along at the Curtlestown forest. You can also get there from Glencree, driving towards Enniskerry. Grid reference O 19 17.

Rockmarshall: Dundalk, Co. Louth. This is a small area of reasonably complex open mountain. To get there, take the N1 north past Dundalk. Turn right at the roundabout, signposted for Carlingford. Follow the O-signs after this.

Ros an Chru na Lua: Kilgarvin, Co. Kerry. This is a complex area of forest and moorland. To get there, take the N22 from Cork towards Killarney. At Poulgorm Bridge, take the left turn towards Kilgarvin and Kenmare (R569). The map is on the right, about 3 miles along the road. Grid reference W 046 790.

Rossbeigh Sand Dunes: Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry. This is a compact area of sand dunes - very technical with a long beach. To get there, take the N70, south from Killorglin. In Glenbeigh villege, turn right for Rossbeigh. Follow the O-signs, or drive as far into the dunes as you can. The parking is usually at the end of the track, at the back of the dunes. Grid reference V 645 915.

Ross Castle: In Killarney, Co. Kerry. This is the same as #Ross Island below, but perhaps with a different entrance.

Ross Island: In Killarney, Co. Kerry. To get there, go into Killarney. The entrance is either opposite the church (on the Killorglin road) or out the Muckross/Kenmare road near Ross Castle. Grid reference V950 888.

Rossmore: Inchigeela, Co. Cork. A complex area of open moorland. To get there, take the N22 from Cork to Macroom. Take the left turn to Inchigeelagh/Ballingeary/Glengarriff (R584). The map is on the right, about 3 miles along the road.

Rostellan: Co. Cork. This is on the main Midleton/Whitegate road. To get there, go to the end of the Midleton by-pass and turn right off the roundabout towards Whitegate. Drive for 3 or 4 miles to Rostellan. The forest is on the right, beside the lake.

Rostrevor: Co. Down. This is made up of steep forest with some intricate open and semi-open mountain at the back. Grid Reference J 19 18.

Ruppulagh Wood:Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. Grid Reference R715 195.

Russborough: Blessington, Co. Wicklow. I presume this is near or around Russborough House. In that case, to get there, take the N81 south from Dublin and go through Blessington. Russborough House is a couple of miles further on. You should see O-signs somewhere near the entrance to the house. Grid reference N 96 11.

Ryecourt: Farnanes, Co. Cork. GR W 460676.
