Leinster League Format 2000-2002: results of ballot.
These are the results of how Leinster clubs voted for their preferred League format for the next two seasons. All clubs voted. The winning format was option 1 'Status Quo' (mixed colour/ alternate format events) taking five 1st preference votes (of eight). Thanks to everyone who contributed.
The Leinster Council has agreed that in the next season there will be 15 events - eight standard colour races and seven alternative foot-O styles. Alternative foot styles to be: Long-O (see comment below), Sprint, Night, Score-combo, Mass-start Butterfly, Park (Olympic format?) and Street.
The Long-O will (hopefully) offer one common backup (short) course for any BLACK, BROWN, BLUE class runners who opts not to run one of the long courses on the day. This should prevent an influx of runners on the GREEN course - with a consequent screwing-up of the points system. Points won for completing the short course will be less than for completing a long course, though.
An effort will be made to rotate the alternative format events to different maps next season.
There are three other issues to be decided by ballot of the Leinster clubs in relation to the LL in the next two seasons:
- Should there be prize-money for the best three males on the BLACK course (or equivalent) and the best three females on BLUE course? (Prizes to be training grants in the order of £100, £50, £25 as given at present).
- Which of the following points scoring system shall be used?
Option 1: World Cup method (status quo) i.e. 50pts, 46pts, 43pts, 40pts, etc.
Option 2: Points based on time. (previous method) i.e. 1000 points for winner and others as time percentage.
Option 3: X-country style. 1, 2, 3, 4, ... The person with fewest points wins at end of season.
(See Orienteering egroup for a discussion on this hot topic last autumn.)
- Should OPCs get free points? (Organisers, Planners, Controllers).
Note that the LOC agreed that there would be not be a vote on the BLACK course until next year in order to give it a fair run before people decide its fate.
Well done to everyone who contributed to the success of the league this season - there have been no wrongly placed controls, no incorrect codes, no cancelled courses. And a special word of thanks to Martin Flynn for all the background work he's being putting in.

Option SET CNOC DUO UCDO AJAX FIN 3ROC GEN Total
A 1 1 2 1 1 1 2 3 12
B 2 2 3 3 2 2 1 2 17
C 4 4 1 2 4 3 3 1 22
D 3 3 4 4 3 4 4 4 29
Individual's comments:
1. Rotate the maps used for the alternate events.
2. Park event may not be worth attending if you have a long way to travel.
3. In Long-O people run out of their normal colour classes which interferes with points.
4. The GEN interclub competition is awkward to include in league points system.
