Kayak Club's 21st Birthday
UCG Kayak Club's 21st Birthday
black tie re-union took place on October 2nd 1998, in the Great Southern
Hotel, Eyre Square, Galway. Almost two hundred past and present UCG paddlers
attended the event (most arriving in Limousines), and a historic, very
elegant night was had by all. Everyone looked absolutely fabulous, particularly
the organisers, who really did a brilliant job of organising the whole
thing. ("You're too kind, but never again, thank you" - Organising
Committee). The paddlers there varied from people who were in the
club more than 15 years ago to undergrads who joined the club last year.
Needless to say, the press were there, but
people managed to get into the Hotel, as the photographers were cordoned
off.
The night began with a wine reception at 7:30pm, followed by a group and
Captain's photo. The meal took place at 8:30pm, and very nice it was too.
Remarkably, all food remained on people's plates, and didn't once become
airborne. Soon enough, after the speeches, the dancing and alcohol consumption
began. We all danced until 2:00am when we were kicked out, and retired
to various parties throughout Galway.
Next morning, people were
still seen around Galway in tuxedoes, some in various states of undress.
The whole event was repeated
on Saturday night, in the Warwick, minus the tuxedoes...what a weekend
!
Scandal wise, this is all I know about so
far....
-
Conor Murray's version of the
birthday suit - one dickie bow and a pair of socks - pity he didn't do
it while he played with the band
-
Musical Beds in Christine's
house afterwards
-
The "mystery girl" who destroyed
poor Jamie Donald's neck
-
Clement Lyons liquid redecoration
of the Great Southern steps
-
The mystery girl who puked all
over the Great Southern Ladies toilets
-
Donnacha Quilty playing Cinderella
with some girls shoe - is there anybody he didn't try ?
-
The cleptomaniacs who robbed
the band's musical shakers...
