Junior A Football Championship Sat 26th April at Na Piarsaigh
Determined Passage defeat St Vincents
Passage
1 - 7 St Vincents 0 - 8
A goal by Passage captain Kevin O’Brien two minutes into
the second half proved decisive in this most exciting and highly competitive
second round Junior A football championship clash between Passage and St
Vincents which was played at the Na Piarsaigh ground on Saturday evening last.
That score put Passage into a seven point lead as they faced into a strong
wind and just provided sufficient cushion to enable them withstand relentless
second half pressure from St Vincents.
Passage elected to play wind assisted in the first half
but had hit five wides by the ninth minute when Alan Keane opened their
scoring with a point from play. A minute later, as the rain began to pour
down, he added a second point following an incisive solo run. A pointed free
by Kevin O’Brien put Passage three ahead before St Vincents opened their
scoring with points from Thomas O’Mahony in the fourteenth minute and from
Gavin O’Connor(free) a minute later.
However, St Vincents failed to score for the remainder
of the half and were not helped by some poor marksmanship in play and with
frees. Passage added on points from Alan Keane in the 25th minute
and from Kevin O’Brien(free) and Alan Healy close to half time. The half time
score was Passage 0-6, St Vincents 0-2.
Following the early second half Passage goal, St
Vincents dominated the scoring for the next twenty minutes with points from
Gavin O’Connor (free), Wayne Murphy, Donncha Dalton and Gavin O’Connor again,
following a quick free by Philip Cunningham. Passage earned a vital free in
the 20th minute, resulting from a foul on the tenacious Eoin
‘Ossie’ O’Brien and this free was duly converted by Kevin O’Brien. However,
they were held scoreless for the last 10 minutes of the game.
This last period of the game was exhilarating as St
Vincent tried to claw back a four point deficit. They were ably assisted by
substitute Cian Barry who shot narrowly wide in a goal mouth skirmish, Christy
Hartnett when moved up front, the ever industrious and man-of-the-match
candidate Gavin O’Connor and many others.
St Vincents were denied a certain goal in the 25th
minute when a powerful goal bound shot by Christy Hartnett was deflected over
the bar by young Passage ’keeper Kevin Mullane who had a great game. Christy
Hartnett had the last score of the game with a point on the stroke of full
time.
Passage had many stars on the evening but their entire
rearranged defense, with Conor Quigley switched to center back, deserves great
credit. Alan Healy, Brian Culloty, Adrian O’Connor, John Cotter, Jonathan
Leonard and Shane McCarthy all excelled at vital stages.
After the game, Passage manager Ciaran O’Reilly
attributed the win to many factors ‘’I asked for a huge team commitment and
said that a win was vital after poor league results. We played a lot of new
players and those fellows stood up out there. We were also helped considerably
by the return from injury of Kevin O’Brien and Conor Quigley. It was a great
result, especially for the younger players’’
In the St Vincent’s camp, manager Alan Rogers attributed
the loss to missed opportunities ’’ We had more than enough ball to win the
game but didn’t take our chances and also missed some easy frees’’

Junior B Football Championship V Ballinure at Ballinure Sun April 27th 11.30am
Ballinure 2-07 0-10 Passage
Passage traveled to Ballinure to play the home side in the first round of the Jun B Football Championship on Sunday morning, playing withy the aid of a strong wind in the first half. The visitors made the most of the advantage and Kevin O'Rourke had the first four points of the game in the opening quarter, two from frees and two from play. Seamus O'Flynn and Sean Murphy gave Passage control at midfield during this time and they would have been further ahead only from an outstanding save by the home keeper from Eoin Barry. Seamus O'Flynn and Paul McCarthy pointed in the eighteenth and twenty seventh minutes respectively, in between Ballinure's only point of the half left it six points to one at the break. Others to play well in the first half were Russel Quigley, Paul Holly and Michael Harrington.
Russel Quigley was causing the home side a lot of problems at full forward and Kevin O' Rourke scored from a free after he was fouled soon after the restart. It was Ballinure who lorded it at midfield in the second half and with the aid of the wind and the incline started pegging Passage back with two goals and a point in three very costly minutes. It was tit for tat for the ten minutes with Passage hitting back with a free from Kevin O'Rourke and an over head kick from Paul McCarthy, Ballinure leveled it again in the forty-fourth minute before Kevin O'Rourke kicked another free again after more good work from Russel Quigley. That was as good as it got with the home side reeling off the final four points of the game to win by three, it was an ill-tempered game at times and some more control by the referee wouldn't have gone astray.
Team:
Paul O'Byrne, Donal Enright, Rob Fitzell, Ronan O'Sullivan, Diarmuid Holly, Michael Harrington, Brian Breen, Sean Murphy, Seamus O'Flynn, Alan McCarthy, Eoin Barry, Thomas Farrell, Paul McCarthy, Russel Quigley, Kevin O'Rourke, Subs: Michael McGrath for Donal Enright & Jamie Murphy for Paul McCarthy
Junior 1 Hurling League V Brian Dillons at Whitescross Sun April 13th 11.30am

Dillons pointed again before an exchange of goals in the 40th minute (Fitzy for Passage) left Passage a mere 3 points ahead. Passage V Nemo Rangers
4 - 07 to 1- 06
Following on from Tuesday nights drawn game in Trabeg it was the home side who learned most from the previous encounter .
Conditions for the match were ideal for both teams. Passage opened the scoring with points from Darren O’Connor & Jonathon Leonard in the forth and fifth minutes then came the first of three disallowed goals for passage for square ball against Gary McCarthy who had a fine game for Passage, despite being under age for another four or five years. Darren O’Connor’s goal was sandwiched between a goal and a point from the visitors before Seamus Forde goaled again for Passage. Nemo however were not lying down and hit back with two points of their own mid way through the half. Passage then began to believe in themselves and scored another Darren O’Connor goal and two Seamus Forde points leaving them with a healthy seven point lead at the interval.
Darren O’Connor started where he left off with a good pointed free and Alan Keane who was having a fine game followed him with another point. Darren got his hat-trick of goals in the forty first minutes after he followed up Seamus Fordes shot which was well stopped. This took what fight was left in Nemo and it was a comfortable final fifteen minutes for the home team.
There were a lot of notable performances apart from the scorers including Eoin Harrington, Ozzie, Lenny and Danny Denton

On Tuesday night Passage travelled to Trabeg to play Nemo in the first round of the 2003 U-21 B football championship. Passage having lost some key players since last years campaign, fielded a strong team with some young players coming through from the minor team.
Conditions for the match were difficult with a strong crosswind making life difficult for both teams. Passage opened the scoring with a fine point from James O’Connor but Nemo replied with four unanswered points to give them a 4 points to 1 lead after 20 minutes. Passage rallied before half time with a good individual point from Alan Keane and a second from corner forward Darren O’Connor. Nemo closed the half with a point to give them a half time lead of 2 points.
Passage resumed the second half strongly and took control of the game through strong displays from Alan Keane, Paul Holly and Eoin O’Brien. Playing into the goal nearest the link road Passage had points from Eoin Harrington and James O’Connor and a goal through Seamus Forde to give them a 3 point lead. After stamping their authority on the game Passage nearly pressed the self-destruct button, playing the ball out of their own defence lost possession and allowed Nemo in to score a goal. This allowed Nemo back into the game and put them back in the lead. Passage battled hard and had claims for a penalty dismissed on 50 minutes. Following this controversy Passage had Darren O’Connor sent off and two other players booked.
Playing with 14 men Passage continued to press and were rewarded with points from Peter O’Flynn and Eoin Harrington to leave just 1 point between the sides with time nearly up. On 60 mins Alan Keane once again came to the rescue following a solo run towards the Nemo goal was fouled on 30 metres and subsequently pointed the free to level the game as the referee blew for full time.
Overall Passage deserved the draw and now await the visit of Nemo for the replay in Passage.

Passage V Whiteschurch at Manning Park Sun 23rd Mar 11.30am - Jun Hurling League 1
Passage 3-06 4-09 Whiteschurch
Passage Scorers:
Alan Keane 0-1, Keith Fitzpatrick 1-2, Seamus Forde 1-1, Alan McCarthy 0-1, Nicolas Lester 1-0, Thomas Harrington 0-1.
Passage played the second round of the the Jun Hurling league against Whiteschurch Sun morning and failed to show the good form they displayed in their opening game. The home side scored first, a Keith Fitzpatrick point in the third minute, but this was the one and only time they led in the game. It was three minutes to halftime before Alan McCarthy had the only other score of the half, the visitors racking up two goals and four points in the opening period. What appeared to be a perfectly good point from David Horan (Disalowed) and two soft goals didn't help our cause in the first half.
Passage played with more determination in the second half and responded well to Whiteschurch's opening two points of the second half with a goal and point from Seamus Forde. In the forty first minute the sides exchanged goals, the passage goal from Keith Fitz after some good work by Tom Harrington and three minutes later Nicolas Lester had the defecit reduced to a Goal after his deflected effort found the net. Whiteschurch increased their lead to four in the forty sixth minute but three Home points on the trot again reduced the gap to the minimum. This was to give the home side false hope as these were their last scores and the visitors scored another soft goal and two more points to run out comfortable winners.

Fr O'Callaghans 1-01 4-04 Passage
Passage Scorers:
Tom O'Neill 2-1, Eric O'Keefe 1-0, John O'Connor 1-0, Stephen Walsh 0-3.
Yesterday our B hurlers were away to Fr.O’Callaghan’s in a match played up in Our Lady’s pitch in Shanakiel. Fielding 5 changes from last week Passage recorded their first win of the campaign against a poor Callaghan’s team.
Passage were the stronger throughout and opened their scoring with a point from Stephen Walsh. This was followed by a goal and a point by Tom O’Neill to leave passage well in control. Passage goaled again through Eric O’Keefe just before half time to give them a lead of 2-02 to no score at half time.
Passage continued where they left off in the second half and further goals from Tom O’Neill and John O’Connor and an 80-yard point from Stephen Walsh sealed victory. Fr.O’Callaghan’s had a late goal and a point to put a respectable look on the final score.

Passage V Na Piarsaig at Manning Park Sun 16th Mar 11.00am - Jun Hurling League 1
Passage 3-09 2-08 Na Piarsaig
Passage Scorers:
Alan Keane 1-2, Keith Fitzpatrick 1-1, Seamus Forde 0-3, Kevin O'Rourke 0-3, Nicolas Lester 1-0.
Passage opened their Junior Hurling League campaign at Manning Park against Na Piarsaig under new coach Bernie Meade without a number of regular players, however this didn't seem to make much difference as the home side notched up a deserved win. Passage got a firm grip in the opening quarter with fine goals from both corner forwards Keith Fitz & Nicolas Lester, followed soon after by a fortuitous goal by Alan Keane which the Na Piarsaig keeper misjudged. Keane followed up straight away with a point after a great catch, during this time all the away side had for their efforts was a single point. Two frees by Kevin O'Rourke and another point by Keane were countered by a goal and a point by Na Piarsaig leaving the score 3-04 to 1-02 at half time.
The second period started with some loose defending by Passage with the result of a goal for Na Piarsaig and with their confidence renewed rattled off four more points without reply. A pointed free by Seamus Forde after Tom Harrington was fouled stopped the rot however when the away side scored another two points the sides were level. It was the character the home side showed at this point which was most pleasing, a Fitzy point, two from Fordy and a great point from Kevin O'Rouke from the side line finished the scoring. Their was drama at the end however with a Na Piarsaig forward through on goal hitting an upright with only the keeper to beat.

Passage Scorers:
Eric O'Keefe 1-0, Jamie Murphy 0-1, Stephen Walsh 0-3.
Passage junior B hurlers opened their league campaign under the management of Billy Cotter and Dave Maxwell at home to Brian Dillons. Brian Dillons playing down the field opened the stronger and were 4 points to the good before Passage registered their first score of the half with a point from a Stephen Walsh free on 24 mins. Unfortunately for Passage, Dillons struck again with a goal before half time, giving them a 1-04 to 01 lead at half time. By this time some of the Home side were showing the effects of a good bank holiday weekend.
Passage were a little rusty after a long winter lay off and a number of changes were made at half time with four fresh pairs of legs being introduced. Passage battled hard for the hour but Dillons were the stronger and took their scores. They notched up 4 more unanswered points after half time before passage struck late with a goal from corner forward Eric O’ Keefe (the Bull) and another point from a free by Jamie Murphy.
Gerry Dorgan and Jamie Murphy were best for Passage over the hour.

Brian Dillons v Passage at Whites Cross Sun 2nd Mar 11.00am - Jun Football League 1
Brian Dillons 0-13 0-9 Passage
Passage Scorers:
Kevin O'Brien 0-6, John Cotter 0-1, James O'Connor 0-1 Paul Maxwell 0-1.
Passage traveled to Brian Dillion this week to try and do one better after faltering to Mayfield at home last week in the dying minutes. Unfortunately it was not to be and after trailing by 8 points after half time they gave a very good last twenty minutes to lose by four points.
Passages were very disappointing in the first half and were losing a lot of possession in the middle of the field and were being punished every time Brian Dillons went forward. After opening their account with a Kevin O’Brien point in the 3rd minute Passage did not score again until just before half time with a James O’Connor point. They went in at half time trailing 8 points to 2 but could have been a lot closer only for some poor finishing in front of goal.
Dillons opened the second half with 2 more points and stretched their lead to 8 and it looked as if Passage were going to be well beaten. However after some stern words from coach Ciaran O’Reilly Passage began to win more possession and gradually picked away at the Dillons lead. In that period passage scored 6 points to Dillons one and there was only a goal in it with 5 minutes to go. Kevin O’Brien kicked 5 out of the six points and John Cotter had the six.. Unfortunately Dillons finished with 2 late points to win by four.
Over the hour the passage defense played well with Alan Healy best for Passage.

Passage 1-7 2-12 Mayfield
Passage Scorers:
Kevin O'Brien 0-3 (2 frees), Seamus Forde 1-0, James O'Connor 0-2, Alan Keane 0-1, Shane McCarthy 0-1
Passage Junior A footballers played their first home game against Mayfield at Saint Peters, Kevin O'Brien opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well taken free however the visitors hit back with three points in four minutes. Seamus Forde was well position to finish to the back of the net smartly in the tenth minute to put the home team back in the lead. In a two minute spell midway through the first half Mayfield scored 1-2 to open a four point lead. Mayfield's economic scoring left them 1-6 to 1-2 ahead at half time even though Kevin O'Brien at Midfield and John Cotter at Center back were excelling.
Passage started the second half well scoring five points to Mayfield's one in the opening twenty minutes of the second half however this unfortunately was to end the home team's scoring. Mayfield laid siege to the Passage goal at the end scoring a goal and four points in the final four minutes to give the impression that Mayfield dominated the game, which they never did until the very end. Others to perform well for Passage were Seamus Forde, Shea Galvin & James O'Connor.

Passage Scorers:
Paul McCarthy 0-5 , Vincent McCarthy 1-2, Keith Fitzpatrick 0-2, Alan McCarthy 0-1, Eoin Barry 0-1, Tom Harrington 0-1, Brian Breen 0-1.
Passage Junior 3 footballers followed up their impressive away win against Fr. O'Callaghans last week with another fine display against Carrigaline. Early points from Tom Harrington and Brian Breen were followed by a speculative lob from thirty yards from Vincent McCarthy which found the back of the net, this was even more remarkable as he had been on the field less than a minute as a replacement for the injured Daniel Howard. In the twenty seventh minute the game should have been wrapped up but Keith Fitzpatrick blasted over from close range. The experienced Tom Harrington along with Paul McCarthy, Francis McIlhenny and Eoin Barry were all playing well leaving the score at half time 1-4 to 0-2 to the home team.
Passage started the second half as they finished the first and a hat trick of points from the three McCarthy brothers had passage pulling away comfortably. Paul McCarthy pointed well again following some good build up play by Tom Harrington, indeed the elder McCarthy brother finished with an impressive haul of five points from play. Others to impress were Diarmuid Holly, Gerry Dorgan and Ronan O'Sullivan.

Na Piarsaig 1-14 1-7 Passage
Passage Scorers:
Alan Keane 0-3, Paul Maxwell 1-0, Kevin O'Brien 0-2, Conor Quigley 0-1, Kevin O'Rourke 0-1
Passage Junior A footballers opened their league campaign with a defeat away to Na Piarsaig on Sunday last. On a bitterly cold and windy morning the home side played with the advantage of the elements in the first half but Passage held their own trailing by only 6 points to 4 at half time. Good defensive displays by Niall Harrington, Brian Culloty and Adrian O'Connor along with some poor shooting by the Home forwards left the Passage boys in good spirits at half time.
If Passage thought the wind was going to win it for them in the second half, they were left in no doubt this was not going to be the case as the home team rattled up a goal and 5 points to Passage's 2 points in the first 10 mins of the second period. Passage rallied in the closing quarter with a fisted goal by Paul Maxwell however a shot against the upright by Alan Keane and a saved penalty from Kevin O'Rourke prevented our lads getting a lot closer before the finish. In the end Na Piarsaig ran out deserving winners, others to perform well for Passage were David Horan, Alan Healy & Conor Quigley.
