Passage West G.A.A. Club
History
History & Hurling Achievements:
The Passage G.A.A club was founded in
1885 primarily as a hurling club and operated in the South East division.
The
club did not concern itself with Football until the late 1930s. While in the
SE
division, Passage won a county junior Hurling title in 1906 and Intermediate
titles in 1924 and in 1930. The club entered the city division in 1952 and
went
intermediate in 1955. A Passage second team played at junior level in the
city
division. Passage won their third county intermediate hurling title in 1960.
Passage played senior hurling from 1961 until 1974 and from1975 until 1989
played at intermediate level at which stage it re-graded to junior. Passage
never won the junior A hurling championship and this is mainly because in
the
period 1955 to 1989 the first Passage team was playing in the senior or
intermediate grade. Passage won the junior A hurling league for the first
time
in 2001 and won the McCurtain cup this year, also for the first time. The
Passage playing pitch, Manning park was purchased in 1949 and opened in
1952, the club played their games in local fields provided by local farmers
Pa Lane, Ned Cadogan and Eddie Aherne. The first dressing rooms were built
in 1961and the current dressing rooms were completed in 1983. The club is
currently actively involved in a project to develop a clubhouse on site of
the
existing dressing rooms.
