Centenary News The photograph(s) appearing with these news items are of a Centenary Dinner earlier this year. Holy Cross Church reached its Centenary in May 2002 and the celebrations are spread over the year until May 2003. A Centenary Mass and meal inaugurated the year. Since then we have had a number of celebrations and others will follow.
Members of the Province along with Cross and Passion Sisters joined in a Mass and lunch on October 15. We were delighted with the response to our invitation and the interest and support shown. Clergy of North Belfast joined the community on the Feast of St. Paul of the Cross on October 19. A parish centenary dinner will be held on December 13. A series of local fundraising events are in full swing. Gary, community members and a committee, including some of the parents of Holy Cross pupils, are meeting weekly. A successful show was held on November 22 featuring Saint Michael's Brass Band (Fermanagh & Tyrone), Irish dancers from Sligo and various guests was held in the newly renovated Holy Cross Hall. On December 15 the Golden Thread Theatre in the Brookfield Complex is hosting a Folk Night for Holy Cross. There is still a huge amount to do. Applications are being processed by the Lottery Heritage Fund; but more of this another time. Pilgrimage To mark our Centenary of the Church. We are offering a pilgrimage to some Passionist shrines in Italy. The pilgrimage will leave from Dublin Airport on Saturday 10th May and return on Saturday, 17th May 2003. The group will be based in Rome for the week and will make trips to Monte Argentario, Shrine of Saint Gabriel, Shrine of St. Maria Goretti at Nettuno, Scala Sancta, Ss. John and Paul's. There will also be a visit to Pompeii and Monte Casino. The price will be available very soon. Any community of the Province that wishes to join in with us on this pilgrimage will be most welcome. I can supply further information to you.
You never know who will turn up on a visit. Recently Quentin Davis, MP, shadow spokesman on Northern Ireland, paid a visit to Holy Cross Church and will be back to see us shortly. Minister Eamon O'Cuiv, TD, will join the community for lunch in early December. A Mayor from upstate New York asked last weekend to visit Holy Cross as part of a fact finding mission. Community: Angelo is going from strength to strength after months in hospital. He is receiving excellent care from a series of nurses who call each day to him. Brendan spent two weeks at Nazareth Care Village, Belfast, and is in good form. Paschal continues to do his work in his usual quiet way. Salvian is in Africa for the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Myles has been in the States on an educational project. Ephrem was snowed under with Birthday greetings on 26th. November. (His age is available in the Province Catalogue). Gary continues to work away on various committees to support the works being undertaken at Holy Cross. Aidan as the temporary scribe remains silent! We were sad to receive the news of the death of Paul Byrne's father in Enniskillen. May he rest in peace. Paul is back at his studies and doing well at this time of grief. Conclusion:
The general political situation is uncertain at present. Street violence
has eased. The original Edenderry House has been demolished by the builders
constructing pensioners' bungalows on what was once Monastery land prior
to 1990. The community takes this opportunity to wish all the brethren
in all parts of the Province a Happy Christmas and New Year. |
