LISMORE SPOUT.

Lismore Spout.

The Spout is situated along the Lismore Castle wall, on the road into Lismore almost opposite what is known by locals as St Carthage's Well.

The original well was situated along the driveway into the Castle and was re-routed away from there by Sir Richard Boyle who wanted to build a coach house on the spot.

Sir Richard's famous chemist son Sir Robert Boyle was reputedly born there.

The Coach house still survives as does the re-routed holy well but both men for all their human power have been well gone since the 1600s.

The Spout has been a source of clean mountain drinking water for a very long time and is the same water that is piped into the castle for consumption by its residents.

The drinking water supplied to the residents of the town is taken from the River Blackwater and even though treated and filtered sometimes after heavy rain, is a little discoloured, although council inspectors claim it is pefectly safe to drink..

Some local poeple still prefer to collect water in containers from the Spout to take home and passing motorists sometimes use it as an unofficial car wash facility.

It is claimed that around the 1850s poor people and labourers working for the castle estate used to live in cabins along this road but Kiely has not been able to verify this.
