The Data Transfer Utility Released

15/01/2003 -- Today I am pleased to announce the release of a Data Transfer Utility which will make the lives of many a data warehouse consultant that much easier.

The Data Transfer Utility is a relatively simple utility that will unload data from an ODBC data source and then load it to a different ODBC accessible data target. For companies who don't have one of the ETL tools available, or who just want to move some data around for testing purposes this will be a very useful utility.

Some of it's nicer features are:

	It runs on win32 and unix.
	It uses ODBC 3.0 compliant calls so it is planned to read any ODBC compliant source and write to RDBMSs that are ODBC compliant. I'll be testing data sources as time goes by and I get access to systems with those sources.
	It moves columns from source to target by name rather than you needing to specify which columns from the source go to the target.
	It can handle target row clashes by updating the target record or deleting the offending record and inserting the new record.
	It can attempt updates first followed by inserts if the target row does not exist.
