FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Instant Data Warehouse Evaluation Version for Oracle 8 on Windows 2000 Released

25/01/2003 -- Following hard on the heels of making the Instant Data Warehouse evaluation version for SQL Server 2000 available I am pleased to announce the release of the Oracle 8 evaluation version of the Instant Data Warehouse.

There were only a few minor problems found and now the code base for the Instant Data Warehouse is exactly the same for both Oracle and SQL Server 2000.  The DB2 UDB evaluation version will be along just as soon as I can.

The evaluation version contains:

An Evaluation Guide on how to install, run and evaluate the evaluation version. Note I have not written a separate guide for Oracle since the only difference is the syntax of the sql to create the tables.
A detailed 'Walk Through the Instant Data Warehouse' and how it works.
The User Guide.
The executable code and commands to execute it.
All the DDL you need to create an Oracle 8 tables and views as well as test data to load into the database.

Once you install the evaluation version you can actually make changes to tables and  add new tables. You can even implement some of your own fact/dimension tables to see how easy it is to set up fact and dimension table processing using the Instant Data Warehouse.

In my testing of the evaluation version it took a little under 2 hours to install, set up and run the programs.

Note1. The Oracle version of the Instant Data Warehouse will not work with the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle because it does not seem to be ODBC 3.0 compliant. There are numerous SQL calls inside the Instant Data Warehouse that failed when they were issued via the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle. When running the Instant Data Warehouse against Oracle you must use the Oracle supplied (or equivalent) ODBC driver.

Note2. The instance of Oracle that I used for testing was case sensitive in the where clauses. Your instance of Oracle might be case sensitive too. The Instant Data Warehouse has been built to be case insensitive. The only place where I found case sensitivity to make a difference was in the dimension table attribution views in the 'where' clause of 'where level_col = 'detail'.  Make sure that your dimension table attribution views return data when a select is performed. It is considered an error to have no data in a dimension table.

For all those who are interested in purchasing the Instant Data Warehouse please contact me on peter@peternolan.net to obtain your copy of the evaluation version.

Best Regards

Peter Nolan
