In 50 years, F1 has visited 61 circuits in 24 countries. Since 1984 the number of Grand Prix organised in a single season has been limited to 16, athough the FIA accepted 17 rounds in 2000. Theoretically, individual countries are able to host one race, although there are exceptions to this rule. The patronage of San Marino, for example, allows Imola to run a second race in Italy, while a second Grand Prix is organised in Germany under the lable "European Grand Prix". The introduction by the FIA of strict safety standards coincided with the disappearance of such legendary circuits a Brands Hatch and Zandvoort.
