Podge’s AXIM Site
I took delivery of my Axim in August ’03. I bought
it primarily for GPS and mapping type stuff. I choose the Axim for cost
reasons.
In order to fulfill my GPS and mapping needs I had to develop some extra equipment. The fist part of the puzzle was to interface my Axim to my garmin Etrex but when I tried to get a cable I found that they weren’t ready yet so I made my own Garmin to Axim cable. This was very successful and worked very well.

I soon got tired of all the cables and bought a Belkin bluetooth card and Globalsat BT308 bluetooth GPS receiver. I choose the Belkin card as I knew it was the same card as the Dell truemobile 300 card except cheaper, the advantage being that Dell were bound to provide driver support. Well, was I wrong, they say “Assumption IS the mother of all $%&*-ups”…..Dell basically provide no support for the Truemobile 300 under PPC2003 even though they continue to sell them. So I fixed it myself and posted the fix on the Dell Forum. I also have it here in case the Dell forum goes away.
My latest addition is a rugged case. I was able to get a hold of a Compaq rugged case and quickly realized that the AXIM X5 fitted very snuggly inside, almost as if it were taylor made. The only problem is the CF slot. The Axim wouldn’t fit with my bluetooth card in place as it pokes out about 1cm.
My solution was to make a CF slot extender. This proved to be even easier that I thought.
