Speech and Language Therapy

Description
The Speech and Language Therapy Department of the Midland Health Board seek to provide a quality, customer oriented service to clients presenting with speech, language and voice disorders.  This encompasses an assessment, diagnostic, treatment and preventative dimension and where required an interdisciplinary approach towards the achievement of Health and Social Gain for each individual client.

Service Provided

Following assessment by a Speech and Language Therapist, where a diagnosis of disability is made, services to clients are then provided at the most appropriate location where his/her needs would be met.  Such locations include educational settings, rehabilitation centres and outpatient Speech and Language Departments.

  • Pre-school children with learning disabilities are seen by Speech and Language Therapists in conjunction with the Counselling Service.
  • Intensive Speech and Language programmes are provided in language classes for 4 to 13 year old children with speech & language disorders in eight primary schools in the region (Portlaoise, Tullamore, Mullingar, Athlone, Longford).
  • Speech & Language therapy services are provided for the hearing impaired at Geashill Primary School and Ballymahon Primary School which cater for children aged 4 to 13 years.
  • Speech and Language Therapy Services including assessment, advice's, therapy and staff training are provided in the special schools in the region for children with learning disabilities.
  • Adults and children with physical and/or sensory disabilities and speech and language disorder are treated in Acute hospital rehabilitation and in educational centres.
  • Adults with learning disabilities who are referred to the Speech and Language Department are assessed and staff at the relevant care unit are provided with a training programme.
  • Where necessary clients may be referred to national specialist centre for assessment or treated in conjunction with such centre. Such centres may include:
    • Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf, Dublin.
    • National Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Dunlaoighre.
    • St. Paul's Unit, Beaumount, Dublin.
    • St. Frances Clinic, Childrens Hospital, Temple Street, Dublin.
    • Cerebral Palsy Ireland, Sandymount, Dublin.

Access
There is an open referral policy and a client and /or their parents or guardian can make direct contact with the Speech and Language Departments.  Referrals are also accepted from all relevant health professionals and other professionals.
