Clochan House is the resource and respite unit for people with physical and sensory disabilities in Laois and Offaly between the ages of 18 - 65.

The centre was established in October 1993 and develops and changes its service supply with the demand and needs of this client group.  Its overall aim is two fold providing respite to clients and carer and to development of the centre as an integral part of the community. This facility is annexed to the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore but has its own separate entrance with wheelchair accessible sensory garden.  The building consists of 5 bedrooms, 3 adjoining bathrooms, kitchen, lounge, storeroom, office, conservatory and resource conference room.

The fifth bedroom is kept for emergency and short stay respite doubling as a treatment room when not in use. The building is wheelchair and visually impaired 'friendly' with the most up to date appliances and aids on hand for use and assessment purposes i.e. level deck showering facilities, Jacuzzi with tracking system, variable height beds and electric beds.

Clochan House also contains a Sensory Resource Centre which services the Board's area.

The Social Worker for the Blind is available at the centre for two days each week providing services to the visually impaired clients in Laois/Offaly.

Structure
Staffing is kept to a minimum to encourage the independence clients may have in their homes. It is co-ordinated by an Occupational Therapist, with two house mothers and four hours of nursing daily which is co-ordinated to meet clients needs.  Also the centre has its own bus with a driver attendant.

The clients are encouraged to integrate their personal assistant into their stay and other support resources include Irish Wheelchair Association, Centre for Independent Living (CIL), FAS workers and volunteers.

  • N.C.B.I. (National Council of the Bind in Ireland)
  • Irish Wheelchair Association
  • The Resource room can be booked in advance at the Clochan House Office
