George's Hill is in the centre of Dublin City, right beside the Corporation Fruit and Vegetable Markets. The area is very much alive with commerce and business. But that was not always the case. |
Dublin in the 18th century was a city of great poverty and on the other side great wealth. At that time Ireland was under English Rule and the Penal Laws were in force. These Penal Laws put huge restrictions on the Catholics of the time, even forbidding them to have an education. They could not be employed and therefore the Catholics were very poor and ignorant. They lived in squalor and were starved. There was no one to help and the situation was desperate. |
It was into this poor, starving Dublin that Teresa Mullally made her appearance. She was to be the salvation of the destitute people of the city and like her counterpart Nano Nagle in Cork, brought the poor forgotten people from a state of degradation to Education and appropriate Living Standards. What Teresa Mullally did in George's Hill will be remembered till the end of time. She brought the people from the gutter to take their place in Society. The following pages tell her history...a history of which, we in George's Hill are so proud. This is not only the history of this area, but a history of 18th Century Ireland. |
