Accelerated Reading Programme The Accelerated Reading Programme has been running very successfully in Scoil Íosagan Primary School, Hospital, Co. Limerick, since 1993. The Accelerated Reader is a technology-based literacy management programme that motivates students aged 6-18 to read more and better books. To use the Accelerated Reading, a student reads a book from the programmes very extensive book list and then tests his or hers knowledge and comprehension of the book by answering multiple choice questions on the computer. The computer handles all scoring and records keeping automatically, and presents the students with a score on completion of the test. The Accelerated Reading allows teachers to generate a wide variety of class and individual performance reports, helping them to both assess and motivate student reading. How the Accelerated Reader Works. Students choose their own book from the list on the Accelerated Reader list. Read the Book Students read the book at their own pace. These are easy to read books with high interest levels. Take the Test Each multiple choice test is carefully designed to verify that the student has read the book. The computer tells the student how many questions she or he answered correctly and awards reading points based on the books length, reading level, and number of correct answers. If the student passes the test the teacher is assured that he or she really has read and understood the book. Recognising Achievement. After the student has completed each test he or she gets immediate feedback in the form of reading points. This single score gives the student instant reinforcement for his or her efforts. It provides the teacher with an accurate measurement of each students performance and it gives parents an easy way to see their childs progress in the reading programme. Benefits of the AR Programme
