All Ireland Girls Basketball 'A' Tournament
Calasanctius College Oranmore once again confirmed its standing as one
of the leading Basketball Schools in the country when finishing runners-up
in the All Ireland Cadette 'A' qualifying tournament in Maree Community
Centre last weekend.
The cream of schoolgirl basketball was on show all weekend with eight teams from all round the country battling it out with an All Ireland Final place at stake.
The Oranmore Girls were playing in the 'A' division for the first time having won minor and junior B All Irelands last year. The Joe Shields coached team easily made the step up and their preparation and commitment was evident from an early stage.
On Saturday morning they faced Ballymahon and after a slow start soon
got into the game. Donna Doyle, Patricia McCarthy, Jasmin Finn and Elaine
Comer all had good baskets to help settle the Oranmore Girls. With the
dependable Maeve Conroy rebounding well they eased into a comfortable
lead approaching half time. The exchanges remained physical throughout
the game, but the Calasanctius Girls had too much class and won pulling
up by 49 points to 27.

Saturday afternoon saw Oranmore face up to Tramore to record their biggest win of the tournament on a score line of 73 points to 24, 31 points from Patricia McCarthy was the highlight of this game with eight more players also getting on the score sheet. An early start on Sunday morning did not upset the Oranmore team when Colaiste Iosagain from Dublin provided the opposition. This proved to be a very difficult game for the home team conceding height advantage all over the court.
Sheer determination kept the Oranmore girls in the game allied to some
astute coaching sending the game into overtime. Some impeccable free throw
shooting from Donna Doyle in this period saw them edge out the Dublin
girls by the narrowest of margins 44 points to 43

Coach Shields now had an undefeated team to challenge an experienced
Skibbereen outfit in the semi-final on Sunday afternoon. Some superb shooting
from Maeve Conroy, Patricia McCarthy and Elaine Comer was the highlight
of this victory. A 17 Pt winning margin was a sign of the confidence with
which the team was now playing and set them up nicely for the clash with
Presentation Listowel.

The Tournament Final proved to be a fitting finale to a weekend of all that was best in Schools Basketball. Two superbly coached and skillful teams took the court with a final place in Tallaght at stake. A great display of shooting from Rachel Clarke was one of the features of this game. With Maeve Conroy and Elaine Comer dominating the boards the signs of victory were pretty good through the first and second quarter. A worry for coach Shields was having to use Elaine Comer sparingly because of foul trouble . However Oranmore continued to lead and were 10 pts. to the good with 4 minutes on the clock.
The Calasanctius Girls suffered a double blow with Patricia McCarthy
retiring injured and Elaine Comer fouling out to hand the initiative to
Listowel. A full court press was more than they could handle, turning
over the ball repeatedly with Listowel taking full advantage on the scoreboard.
A seven point defeat was a cruel blow for a team who showed such courage
throughout this tournament. Coach Shiels can feel very proud of their
displays and will look to the future with great confidence.

Conroy (8), Jasmin Finn (6), Patricia McCarthy (6).
