Antibiotics, Drugs & Vaccines for Livestock

From the TAHIP (Teagasc Animal Health Information Portal) Webpages

Please read the Disclaimer before using information given in these pages

Note: Foods derived from animal products (dairy products, meats, food ingredients, sauces, etc) should be as free of drug residues as possible. Inappropriate use of animal remedies (drugs, antibiotics, anthelmintics, vaccines, etc) in food-animals can pose a threat to the human food chain. It also can lead to the emergence of drug-resistent strains of bacteria, funguses and parasites. This can pose a threat not only to animals on the farm, but also to animals on neighbouring farms, AND to human health. The increase in documented cases of MRSA is attributed, in part, to excessive or inappropriate use of antibiotics in animals.

Therefore, farmers should seek veterinary advice on the correct choice and usage of animal remedies, whether these are POMs (Prescription Only Medicines) or OTCMs (Over-the-Counter Medicines).
