Shannonbridge is located in the heart of Ireland in
West Offaly on the river Shannon. It is 16 miles south of Athlone and 4
miles from the monastic settlement of Clonmacnois. Shannonbridge lies in a
bogland area and is surrounded by 'callow land', which is flooded by the
river Shannon during the winter months. Shannonbridge is situated on the border of
counties Roscommon and Galway, and was built near 'an esker riada' which
was a major routeway in the 18th century. Shannonbridge is off the main
Dublin / Galway road, the N6, on the N355. It is approximately ninety miles from Dublin and
forty miles from Galway.
