Green School’s UpdateThe Green School Committee have been very busy creating a Green School Notice Board in the School Hall. New recycling bins are in all classrooms and everyone is making an effort to follow the three Rs REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE We are about to embark on “Our Action Plan” – this is the “Rathcormac School Plan” to achieve our Green Flag status. When this plan is completed we will be ready to apply for our flag. Fun Activities for this term include: The Green School Committee would l;ike to say a big thank you to parents and pupils for their cooperation particularly with regard to lunch boxes. We are now recycling and composting successfully. We are very much on target. Alice O’Rourke, from Sligo County Council, is helping and she is very pleased with our progress to date. Mary Power (Coordinating Teacher) For more on this visit An Taisce Green Schools Project Page on: www.antaisce.org/projects/greenschools.html Building for the FutureThe school co-ordinator of the Building for the Future initiative Mr Carl O’Rourke, is delighted to announce that a sufficient number of tokens have been collected to enter the project. This is a great credit to the dedicated efforts of pupils, their parents, friends and families who collected a grand total of 8130 tokens, or 30 per pupil in the school from the Irish Independent newspaper. This has guaranteed a Mitsubishi Television for the school and we can now embark on preparing a project under the theme, “My Favourite Building”, over the next few weeks. It is hoped that each class in the school will contibute to this project. On entering the project the school will receive a Mistsubishi Video player and can complete for cash development grants for the school. The Building for the Future initiative is a nationwide competition. Cumann na mBunscolSince our last series of match reports the Rathcormac Boys and Girls teams have played Calry and St Edwards National schools respectively. The boys' team recorded two victories and played with great skill on both outings. The girls' team were defeated by a stronger Calry side in an entertaining game while they recorded an excellent win over St Edwards. It is very encouraging to see the large panels which are traning with both teams. I.N.T.O. Mini SevensThe Rathcormac Boys seven-a-side Gaelic team won the National Schools County Title on Monday 10th May after a thrilling one point victory over a courageous Strandhill team. The final was a superb example of schools' football with both teams playing with great verve and tenacity. Rathcormac had defeated a strong Geevah team in the semi-final. During the trophy presentation the Chairman of Cumann na mBunscol Sligeach, Mr John Hughes, gave credit to the high standard of skill and sportsmanship displayed by the teams involved on the day. Now we can look forward to 'winning' the Connacht Title, and who knows, maybe even the National! Fourth Class PlayFourth Class are busy rehearsing their second play of the year 'Alas in Blunderland'. Everyone is working hard and enjoying rehearsals. Community GamesCongratulations to all participants in the various community games competitions. Many pupils from the school have won prizes in a whole range of activities from art, cycling to swimming and athletics.
