School News June 2005

Message from Fr Michael, Chairperson of the Board of Management

Last year I recall wishing the staff and pupils a good holiday and hoped to see them returned "tanned" and "full of energy". By now the tan has worn off and the energy levels have dropped. I'm not surprised because everybody has worked so hard for the good of the pupils and the community where we live.

Apart from the usual work, and preparing children for the sacraments, this year will be remembered as Michael McTighe's last year as Principal. He has been Principal of Rathcormac NS for 30 years and I have enjoyed working closely with him for exactly 13 of them. On behalf of all parents, whose children he cared for as Principal, I say, "Go raibh maith agat, a mháistir, and may you have many years to enjoy your retirement."

Another aspect of historical importance is that we achieved the Green Flag this year. This was due to the motivation of Mary Power, Coordinator of the Green Flag Committee, the support of the Parent Association and of course the children themselves who amongst many other things spent one whole day clearing the place of litter. I never saw so much rubbish! I might add that Seán, our new caretaker, was also most helpful (and I gave him a hand!!)

Finally, to all who helped in the school this year, 2004-2005, teachers, staff, parents and friends, and of course the pupils themselves, well done everybody and now get out in the sun and have that tan restored!

and playing "The Rope Waltz" at that assembly for the last time!

Ms Brid Regan also retires this year. We thank her for all her years of teaching in Rathcormac school. Unfortunately she has been away from school sick these past 12 months so we were unable to say thank you to her on behalf of the school at the last assembly, we wish her a speedy recovery and a happy retirement.

Hoist the Green Flag!

On Thursday 23rd June the Green Flag was raised in the school yard in front of a large assembly of pupils, staff and parents. Congratulations Rathcormac School and thank you Mary Power and the Green Flag Committee!

K'Nex Finals at Sligo IT

Two pupils represented the school at the Regional Finals of the K'Nex challenge that came to Rathcormac School in May. 4th & 5th Classes took part and a winning team was selected.

They both did extremely well coming 3rd in the finals. They had to build a space tower that had a top that revolved and could hold 500grammes of space equipment. It also had to have a ladder. The overall height had to be under 50cm (not counting the satellite dishes!) Well done!

Poetry Week

We had a fine week that culminated in an assembly at which each classes recited poems. Teachers swapped classes and read their favourite poems. We also produced poems for the poetry wall.

Lucy's 'Lucinations
a play by 5th Class

A huge effort went into this production with great results. We adapted a play, Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations’, to suit our needs and allow the class to create some of their own work. It was very funny and was enjoyed by all audiences. Well done 5th Class!

Surprise Visit by a Choir from Iceland!

We had a surprise visit from a choir from Iceland. They were touring Ireland and called into the school to give us a few traditional songs from their country. They sang unaccompanied and the children enjoyed the impromptu concert.
