Although it is too early to get excited or to start getting any notions, it is still nice to see Athlone Town sit proudly on top of the Eircom League First Division after three games

The team deserbe every accolade going.  Their performances in winning away to both Home Farm Fingal and Cobh Ramblers were excellent results and laid to rest two bogey venues where Athlone have done poorly in the past Apart from those wins, the manner of their achievements is very pleasing.  Athlone are playing with great style and are simply a joy to watch. It is important that we now maintain and emulate those high standards in every game, weel in week out. A word of thanks is due to those from the club to those who travelled to both away games and gave the team such good support.  There is a great momentum now building and long may it continue.

Home To Drogheda

Athlone Town are next in action this Friday evening (ko 7:45 pm) when Drogheda United are the visitors to St. Mel's Park.
Drogheda were relegated last season, finishing bottom of the Premier Division.  They have lost alot of players from that squad though.  Drogheda also have a new manager in former Town favourite and centre-half, Harry McCue.  He has made a number of additions to his squad. He has signed St. Francis goalkeeper, Cathal Warfield and Declan Cronin from Bangor.  He has also signed three players who helped Longford Town achieve promotion last season in Even Creedon, Ger Thompson and James Farrell. However, Drogheda have not made the best start, drawing their first game and losing the Co. Louth derby to Dundalk last week.  They will be anxious to ensure that further gaps do not open on the League table.
Athlone will be hoping to cary on where they left off in Cobh.  However, Liam Buckley will be wary of the Galway experience, who conceeded five goals against Bohs after scoring five the previous week.  Athlone must play without Tommy Hewitt and John Butler, who will both miss the game.  Otherwise, it is a full squad, all raring to go and build on the good start already made.  The team have made a great start and deserve to have a big support in St. Mel's Park on Friday night.

Commiserations
Commiserations to Bealnamulla in the Ladies FAI Cup Final on Sunday last.  Bealnamulla were conceding too much experience and sheer physical size to Shamrock Rovers, who won the Cup for the fifth consecutive year.  However, Bealnamulla deserve great praise for reaching this Final and can be very proud of the way they played in the final, with great pride and spirit.  Their day will come at this level.

Congratulations!
Well done to Athlone Town midfielder, Damien Rushe who has been awarded a soccer sports scholarship to attend Athlone Institute of Technology next term.
Congratulations also to Roscommon Juniors and to former players, Shane Curran and Andy Carberry on their All-Ireland success last weekend.  Best wishes to Westmeath Minors this Sunday also.
