Galway United 1 - 1 Finn Harps

Finn Harps came away from Terryland Park with a point after leading the game for 65 minutes but all the post-match reaction on Monday morning centred around the shock resignation of their manager.

After only six games of the new season, Noel King has resigned stating travelling and personal reasons for his sudden departure. Like the start of last years campaign Harps find themselves in the position of looking for a new manager instead of concentrating on the league.

They went into this game knowing that a win over an understrength Galway side would leave them top of the division, albeit for a short time. They have struggled to beat the Tribesmen in recent seasons and Friday night proved no different.

Harps went into the lead after only ten minutes when a fine move down the left involving Jonathan Minnock and Kevin McHugh let in Niall Bonner. The Drumkeen lad finished well from just inside the area giving Gough in the Galway goal no chance with a sweetly struck shot.

Goal: Niall Bonner

Harps totally dominated the half but didn't force Gough into action despite all the possession.

It was a much changed second half with Galway putting Harps under some real pressure from the re-start. Colin Fortune's free-kick was denied by an excellent stop from James Gallagher and the Harps keeper was on hand again to deny Adrian Carberry

Their pressure finally paid off with 15 minutes left on the clock. A Tony Folan corner on the right was chipped in and Conor Frawley got his head to the ball at the near post. It caused chaos on the Harps goal line allowing John Russell to bundle home at the back post.

It wasn't Frawley final involvement in the game when an off the ball incident involving himself and Kevin McHugh left the Harps number ten on the deck and the ex-Harps defender was shown a straight red.

Harps will have been extremely disappointed not to have added to their tally in the first half in a game that they really could have won but will now have more urgent matters to think about as they welcome Bray Wanderers to Ballybofey next weekend.
