Finn Harps 3 - 0 Monaghan United

A wonder goal from Niall Bonner four minutes from time sent Harps through to the quarter finals of the League Cup at Finn Park tonight (Tuesday).

Harps had needed to win by three goals to progress. They created chance after chance and they led one nil on 24 minutes. Kevin McHugh ran onto a through ball and finished clinically after chesting it down. McHugh and Shane Bradley were guilty of missing good chances and Chrissy Breen created problems for the Monaghan rearguard but it finished one nil at half-time.

After the re-start Harps went straight after the goals they needed and Niall Bonner went close while Gary Crossan fired over when he really should have passed to McHugh who was through on goal. Breen also created openings and Harps had a flurry of corners but it was another through ball that led to the second goal when Crossan cut into the area and fired in low and hard beneath Monaghan keeper Vladimir Munteanu on 65 minutes. It was his second goal in the last two games and certainly made up for his earlier miss.

Harps pushed hard for a third but after hitting the woodwork it didn't look like their night. Then Bonner picked up the ball thirty yards out and there seemed little danger. The winger's perfectly struck shot curled and dipped straight into the top corner of the net to the delight of a smaller than usual but very passionate home crowd. It was certainly a goal to be savoured and one of the best that Finn Park has seen in quite a while.

Harps now go through to the quarter finals of the league cup and should take great confidence from tonights performance from a team made up entirely of local talent.

Finn Harps: Gallagher, O'Donnell, Bradley, Boyle, Minnock, Crossan, McGowan, McGrenaghan, Bonner, McHugh, Breen.
