CHESMAYNE
Talent
A special natural ability or aptitude - a capacity for
achievement or success - a power of mind considered as committed to one for use and
improvement - inclination or disposition - gifted. Goethe: “talent grows in peace, character in
the current of affairs”. The essential
ability of a chess player is an exceptionally high level of visual and spatial intelligence, which is traced to the left-hand side of the human brain. Normal intelligence comes from
the right-side of the brain. A top
flight player will have built up a mental encyclopedia containing 50,000+ chess patterns. However,
courage and ‘fighting spirit’ are also essential. ‘The Admirable Crichton’: one distinguished
by all-round talents. The ‘Admirable
Doctor’: Roger Bacon.
“Talent develops in quiet places, character in the full current of human
life”.
