My
favourite restaurants in Pau
In
Hedas, where the house is situated, there are several restaurants of which I
really like two. La table d'hote is on the right hand side of the parking lot
and is nice (medium price). When you continue 20 m and go up the stairs on the
right you will find Gusto which is an excellent Italian restaurant (no pizza). I
really love their food, it is a rather popular restaurant but you should
reserve in the evening. It isn't the cheapest of Pau but offers excellent price
quality ratio... Nice stone walls and friendly service!
Pau has a several charming
restaurants. I mention here some of my favourites
:
If
you are into Gourmet there are several interesting restaurants. In the centre
there is Spago (Italian, pricey), opposite of the railway station the Au Fin
Gourmet is also very good. On the way towards Gan there is Castel de Pont d'Oly
(very good!) and close to Hippodrome on Route de Bordeaux Le Fer de Cheval is
really good price quality wise. Try their lunch menu with their excellent
wine.
The Chez Ruffet in Jurancon is excellent and still one of my
favourites. Couldn't afford to go there every week, though...
One very nice
restaurant is l'Horizon in Gan with beautiful terasse. In general the Gourmet
restaurants are very good value for lunch but they are pretty pricey for dinner.
Depends of course what is your point of comparison...
For
Pizza lovers...
We love the Napoli which is on the street going down to
place Gramont (150 m from the house). There are several pizzerias in the
quartier du chateau, like Etna which is "pas mal".
If
you like fish and seafood there is La Concha on Place Verdun. It is a biggish
restaurant but their fish is just great. You should try their Merlu a
l'espagnole which is delicious! An other restaurant for excellent fish is Au
bord de l'eau in Golf de Billere (the golf course) but it is a bit pricey. A
reasonably priced and one of our favourites in the centre of Pau is the Maitre
Kanter on Place Clemenceau. My favourite there is "tartare de saumon". It is a
good restaurant with kids...
An other very nice (and not expensive) fish
restaurant is La Croque Sel in Lée bit outside the city.
If you want to experience a
"bistro à la paloise" you should try Le Berry on Place Clemenceau. It is
immensely popular but is worth the queuing. Most people eat their entrecôte
which is to die for. Also their steak tartar is
pretty famous...
