BOOK LAUNCH:
The big event of the week in Emly
was the launch of the Emly GAA history 'The Parish of
Emly - History of Gaelic Games and Athletics.'
A large gathering met in the Golden
Thatch, Emly on Friday night last when the book was launched by
the President of the GAA, Séan McCague. Among the guests of honour
with the President were Archbishop Dermot Clifford, Archbishop
of Cashel and Emly and Patron of the GAA., Con Hogan, Chairman,
Tipperary County Board, Seamus Ó Riain, a former President of
the GAA and Denis Ryan, Chairman of the West Tipperary Board.
All the guests were welcomed by local
club chairman, John McGrath who congratulated the editor of the
book, Michael O Dwyer and his sub-committee, Michael Frawley,
Paddy Clancy, Michael Hennessy, John Hennessy and Sean McManus.
The various speakers were high in
their praise of the excellence of the new publication and commented
on the amount of research which had to be carried out before it
could be brought to fruition. Special praise was reserved for
editor, Michael O'Dwyer and his great contribution to the continuing
chronicaling of the history of Emly. Michael was also author of
'the Parish of Emly- Its History and Heritage' which was published
in 1987. This latter book is now out of print.
The activities of the night went
very smoothly and great credit for this must go to the M.C., Antoinette
Cunningham who is the secretary of the local club. Antoinette
introduced each speaker to the large gathering from Emly and the
County and ably supervised the various formalities.
Our photo shows L to R: Michael O'Dwyer,
editor, Sean McCague, President of the Gaelic Athletic Association,
Michael Frawley, member of the history committee and chairman of
the County Tipperary Football Board and Paddy Clancy, member of
the history committee.
NOVEMBER 5th 2000:
HOLY SOULS: We have
entered November, the month of the Holy Souls. The practice of remembering
the souls of our departed is still strong amongst us. Mass is offered
each night during this month in our parish church for the eternal
rest of our people who have died. Many parishioners gather in the
local cemetery each Sunday to offer the rosary for this same intention.
May all our family members, friends and parishioners find their
happiness in God's Kingdom.
WEATHER: Over the
past week we have been seeing the news reports of serious flooding
throughout Britain. Today Ireland has been hit with storms and heavy
rain. South Tipperary has been badly hit. In Emly it is easy to
see where the old lake was situated. The area that we call 'the
marsh' is very flooded showing us clearly where the lake and 'the
edge of the lake' (Immeal Loch - Emly) was situated. Luckily, new
drainage work recently carried out in the village has removed potential
flooding hazards.
GAA HISTORY: Next
Friday is 'D day' for the launch of the Emly GAA book. At a special
function in 'The Golden Thatch' the book will be launched by the
President of the Gaelic Athletic Association, Sean McCague.
GREETINGS to Catherine
Laffy (nee Brennan) in Australia. Greetings also to her niece Nollaig
Brennan who is at present in Australia. I'm glad that they both
can keep in touch with home through this website.

BOTHAR is an organisation
here in Ireland which for a number of years hasbeen sending in-calf
heifers to families in Third World countries. In 1995 a number of
farmers in Emly decided to get involved in the Bothar project and
sent 4 in-calf heifers to Uganda. This year it is hoped to send
at least two heifers to Kosovo in Yugoslavia. These will be donated
locally but money must also be raised to cover the shipment of the
animals. This fundraising is now in progress in Emly.
