Féile na nGael Weekend 2006 (16th-18thJume 2006)

For the second year in a row Cork hosted the Féile na nGael  games. As like last year we had the weather on our side. Rockbán participated for the second year and this year hosted Derry champions Ballinascreen. This team proved to be our toughest opposition. Our opening match was against Ballinascreen in Whitechurch on the Friday afternoon where a strong Ballinascreen outfit beat a determined Rockbán. After the game both teams mixed and mingled and new friendships were born. Following food and drinks both teams headed off to the Parade. A number of hours were spent in town nwhere over 150 teams were on display. By nightfall all were tired and  retired early for the start on Saturday morning. Our remaining group games were played in Killeagh. First up in the morning was Ballinascreen and Killeagh where the Derry champions came out on top. Rockbán now faced Offaly champions Kinnity. Offaly had beaten Killeagh the previous day and this game lived up to all expectations where a close fought contest took place. This game went down to wire with Rockbán snatching victory with a goal with the last puck of the game to win by a point. The group still open with a slight possibility of qualification to the semi finals. After an hour break Rockbán took to the pitch again to take on Killeagh and again Rockbán were victorious. The final game in the group saw Ballinascreen take on Killeagh were they too they were victorious and topped the group to go forward to the semi finals. Rockbán finished second in the group. We would like to thank Killeagh for hosting the group on day two and providing food and refreshments to all which were greatly appreciated. Next up was a trip to Watergrasshill to support out host team Ballinascreen take on Laois champions Camross in the semi final. A very close and exciting game took place which saw Derry champions Ballinascreen win by a single point. Great excitement after the game for both Ballinascreen and Rockbán supporters who turned out in big numbers to support their host team. Both teams attended Mass in Waterloo on Sunday morning were local Curate Fr William Winter welcomed the teams and wished the Derry girls the best of luck in the final. Final stop was Pairc Ui Rinn at mid day where Ballinascreen took on Down champions Ballycran. As in the semi final another close exciting game took place but unfortunately the Derry champions were on the wrong side of a single point game. So close but yet so far. Words could not describe the disappointment felt by Ballinascreen and the Rockbán supporters after the defeat of the Derry champions but unfortunately that is sport. In participation one must take the high's with the low's and get up and go again. Overall a very enjoyable weekend was had by all. Life long friendships have been made and hopefully we will meet our Derry counterparts in the future. Rockbán GAA club would like to thank all who made this weekend a success and greatly appreciate all their efforts. On behalf of Rockbán club thanks again to all involved.

                    Under 14 Muskerry Football Final.

Rockbán 4.08 - Donoughmore 4.07 (Whitechurch 11/06/06)

Rockbán and Donoughmore met in the Muskerry under 14 football on Sunday June 11th in Whitechurch. As the scoreline suggests a classic game resulted. This was the first of two finals to be contested by these teams. Donoughmore opened the stronger and within 10 minutes hit 2.02 without reply to leave the Rockbán team stunned and also the sideline. Early on it looked like a mismatch of teams but this current Rockbán team is renowned for battling to the end and never giving up and to their credit, started to claw themselves back into the game. They hit a number of wides before Sinead Dilworth got them off the mark with a point. Rockbán aapplied continuous pressure and eventually were rewarded with a well taken goal from Anne Marie O'Sullivan and Rockbán followed with another point from Sinead. Rockbán now back in the game then uncharacteristically gifted Donoughmore another goal to trail again by six points. Grind down as they do Rockbán moved up another gear with Megan Brickley and Michelle Healy winning possession at midfield. Goal of the match followed after a brilliant move including Colleen Foley , Sinead Dilworth and finished off by Orla Burke. Donoughmore pointed again before the break to leave the sides Donoughmore 3.03 - Rockbán 2.02 at the break.

Having played against the breeze in the opening half Rockbán had the wind advantage in the second and to their credit opened the stronger and hit two points from Michelle Healy and Sinead Dilworth. All possession was now with Rockbán and following constant bombardment of the Donoughmore defence Emma O'Driscoll goaled to give Rockbán the lead for the first time. Donoughmore attempted to break through the Rockbán defence but both the full back line and centre back line were holding solid. Sinead hit another point following well won possession from Anne Marie O'Sullivan. Cliona Forde replaced Samantha Scanlon. Rockbán stretched the lead following a super point from Emma and when the deadly left foot of Sinead hit again Rockbán enjoyed a six point lead 3.06 - 2.03. Donoughmore responded and hit a further 1.01 to put the game back in the melting pot but Shauna Brickley followed through on an Orla Burke shot to ensure the ball crossed the line to restore a five point lead for Rockbán. Gemma Cahill came on for Shauna Brickley and Roisín O'Sullivan replaced Kate Howard. Donoughmore pointed 2 close in frees to keep the game alive at 4.06 to 3.06. Sinead and Emma hit 2 further points to what seemed to secure the game and then Donoughmore goaled for a fourth time to leave a cliff hanger finish at 4.08 - 4.06. Donoughmore were awarded a 21 yard free which from a distance some thought it had gone into the net but not quiet as the ball skimmed over the bar onto the roof of the net to leave the scores 4.08 - 4.07. Rockbán breathed a sigh of relief when referee James Dorgan blew the final whistle to end an epic battle between two skillful teams. Rockbán celebrated a great victory. Enormous credit must be given to both teams for a highly entertaining and skillful game. Credit too must go to referee James Dorgan who allowed the game to flow but still penalised both teams for breach of the rules. After the game Muskerry representative Bridget O'Brien presented Rockbán captain Sinead Dilworth with the trophy. Congratulations and well done to all involved. The team lined out as follows:

Rockbán Ladies Football & Camogie Club.

3rd ANNUAL DOG SHOW

SUNDAY 28th MAY AT 12.30pm

COOLOWEN, BLARNEY, CO.CORK

Rockbán Ladies Football and Camogie Club held their main fundraising event on Sunday May 28th last in Coolowen. This proved to be a huge success and some badly needed funds were raised. The success could not have been possible without the help of all Club members and volunteers who gave up their time to help make this day a huge sussess and in particular to the Spillane family. Noel, Martina, Ciara and Brian were instrumental in the organisation of the event. Rockbán Club would like to thank the Spillane family and all who helped on the day. We had the luck of the weather on our side also which helped the people come and join in a great family day out. Despite the attraction of Cork and Clare on the TV huge crowds attended. There were alot of side attractions for all ages and a great day was had by all. One of the main features of the Dog Show was the qualifier for the Champion of Champions to be held at the Midlands Game Fair on September 16th and 17th next. This was won by Declan Wallace with his dog Cassy a 16 month Blackfill bitch. We wish Declan success in the September competition. This event is proving to be very successful and we hope to continue for many years to come. Rockbán Club would  also like to thank Tom and Marie Mulcahy for the use of the land. This is very much appreciated.

Below some photographs of the day.

Under 14 Footballer's loose out to Liscarroll in County Championship

Rockbán 1.03 - Liscarroll 1.06

Having drawn the previous week in the opening round of the under 14 football championship with Liscarroll away on a score line of 3.04 each, this replay had the makings of another close encounter. The game was played in Carrig Na Bhfear in ideal conditions. Rockbán started the stronger and following continuous pressure were awarded a penalty after 10 minutes. Unfortunately the penalty struck the post and went wide. Rockbán opened the scoring through Sinead Dilworth following a well worked move from Samantha Scanlon. Liscarroll started to come into the game but failed to register the vital scores. Rockbán back line were winning vital possession with Aisling Furlong,Colleen Foley and Eve O'Mahony dominating the half back line. Katie Grace made a couple of point blank saves to deny Liscarroll. Rockbán registered a further 2 points after 20 minutes of play to leave a 3 point margin. However Rockbán were living dangerous and it was only a matter of time before Liscarrroll would make the break through. This they achieved after scoring a point before the interval to leave the scores 0.03 - 0.01 at the break.

The breeze favoured Rockbán in the opening half and from the start of the second half Liscarroll dominated and hit 1.01 in the opening 5 minutes. Rockbán were now on the back foot and try as they did could not breach the Liscarrol defence in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. However the backline tried their best to soak the continuous Liscarroll pressure. Liscarroll had a very strong centre line which was causing Rockbán trouble.0 Liscarroll hit another point to leave 3 the margin. Rockbán made two substitutions through Roisín O'Sullivan for Samantha Scanlon and Gemma Cahill for Shauna Brickley. To their credit Rockbán never gave up and kept trying and with 8 minutes were thrown a life line following a well worked goal from Sinead Dilworth to leave the sides level again. Rockbán had a chance to take the lead but unfortunately the ball went wide. Liscarroll were awarded a 21 yard free with 2 minutes remaining and pointed and ran in another 2 before the final whistle was blown to leave the final score Rockán 1.03 - Liscarroll 1.06.

Unfortunately this ends the Championship for the 2006 season but the future looks bright for this bunch of girls provided they continue to train and work together. Well done and thanks to all involved.

Rockbán 2.02 - Buttevant 2.0(Buttevant 06/04/06)

Rockbán under 14 girls opened their 2006 campaign with a thrilling nail biting match against Buttevant in Battervant on Thursday April 06th last. The scoreline does not reflect the intensity and excitement of a game played in great spirit. The opening game of any campaign is usually not free flowing but this game was full of goal mouth action and skill.

It was Buttevant who opened the scoring following an opportunistic goal after 16 minutes following loads of pressure. Katie Grace was proving hard to beat in goal and make some vital saves in the opening half to deny Buttevant. Colleen Foley at centre back kept control of the back line and cleared some very important balls. It took Rockbán 23 minutes to register thier first score. A well taken point from full forward Samantha Scanlon settled the team and within a minute Rockbán took the lead following a great strike from wing forward Anne Marie O'Sullivan who rattled the Buttevant net. Rockbán had now the upper hand of thier opponents despite playing against the breeze. Just before the break Sinead Dilworth was unlucky after her free came off the wood work and out for a 65 which resulted in a goal to leave Rockbán 2.01 to 1.0 up at the break.

The reliable Sinead stretched the Rockbán lead after 2 minutes of the restart. Both back lines were tested over the coming 10 minutes and both lived up to the task. Roisin O'Sullivan replaced Kate Daly for Rockbán. Buttevant gained the upper hand for the closing 15 minutes but couldn't break down the Rockbán defence until 3 minutes from time when they goaled for the second time to leave the score Rockbán 2.02 - Buttevant 2.0. A dangerous lead to have in the closing minutes but Rockbán held on to earn a well deserved victory. This was no more than the team deserved following a very hearty display. The team lined out as follows:

Katie Grace

Kate Howard - Muireann McSweeney - Sarah Carey

Eve O'Mahony - Colleen Foley - Aisling Furlong

Megan Brickley - Michelle Healy

Anne Marie O'Sullivan(1.0) - Sinead Dilworth(1.01) - Kate Daly

Rockbán U-13 footballer's advance to Muskerry final following convincing win over St Vals.

Rockbán 3.06 - St Vals 1.02 (Kilmurray Sunday 12/02/06)

This was a game of hard grafting from the Rockbán girls. All players from No.1 to No.16 played their part. Playing against the breeze in the opening half Rockbán trailed 1.02 - 0.03 at the interval. Rockbán were unfortunate not to have scored 2 goals in the first half following 2 rebounds off the woodwork. Our opening score came from the boot of Anne Marie O'Sullivan and the on form Sinead Dilworth hit 2 well taken points. Cliona Forde replaced the injured Mairead Jones at the break. Playing with the breeze in the second half Rockbán started in determined fashion and found themselves 2 points up after 5 minutes following a point from Emma O'Driscoll and a goal from substitute Cliona Forde following a goal mouth scramble. Sinead pointed a free and Rockbán laid seige in the Vals half and when Sinead Dilworth hit the second goal on 13 minutes Rockbán never looked back. The final 2 scores came from an Anne Marie O'Sullivan point and a well taken fisted goal from Shauna Brickley to leave 10 points the margin. The scoreline indicates a forward dominated game but in reality the Rockbán backline were outstanding. They deprived Vals of any score in the second half. Each time Vals attacked the backline stood solid with some outstanding tackeling. Rockbán now meet Donoughmore in the final. We wish the girls continued success. The team lined out as follows:

Katie Grace

Sarah Carey - Muireann McSweeney - Kate Howard

Eve O'Mahony - Colleen Foley - Samantha Scanlon

Sinead Dilworth(1.03) - Megan Brickley

Aisling Furlong - Emma O'Driscoll(0.01) - Michelle Healy

The Rockbán Annual General Meeting took place in the Whitechurch and Waterloo Community Hall on Friday January 20th at 8 pm. A review of the 2005 season took place. One of the highlights being Cork's victory in the All Ireland senior ladies final where Rockbán had four fantastic representatives in Niamh Keohane - Valerie Mulcahy - Elaine Harte and Catriona Foley with Cartriona becomming the Clubs first All Medal winner following her camogie success with Cork.Congratulations to all. CORK LADIES FOOTBALL VICTORY DINNER, Mary White

Glamour stole the show on Saturday night at the Cork ladies football victory
dinner in Silversprings Hotel.
On an occasion that honoured the incredible achievements of Cork ladies
football in 2005, it was the intercounty stars in attendance who out-sparkled
the sea of silverware.
There was one male exception however and that was Brendan Martin who sat
proudly on the podium for the night.
The 300 strong crowd gathered to celebrate a year which we will unlikely see
again in our lifetime - the first senior All-Ireland and national league title
on the Banks, the U16 All-Ireland title and back to back Munster titles at
every level.
It was a scene similar to that of a film premiere as photographers snapped
players with their guests on arrival and the celebrations officially commenced
with welcoming of the cups by the relevant captains.
Niamh O’Keeffe (Erins Own) with the U14 Munster cup, Vicki Power (Beara) with
the U16 All-Ireland cup, Emma Dunne (St Vals) with the minor Munster cup, Annie
Walsh (Inch Rovers) with the Munster junior cup, Elaine Harte (Rockbán) with
the national league cup and senior skipper Juliet Murphy (Donoughmore) hand in
hand with the one and only Brendan Martin.
Special guests included Lord Mayor Deirdre Clune, County Mayor Michael Creed,
Bishop John Buckley, Tom Madigan (Munster Council), Marian McCarthy (Camogie
Board), Des Cullinane (Cork Men’s GAA Board) and guest speaker Trevor Welsh,
TV3.
According to Welsh, "Women create their own destinies. And you certainly have
done that. On that I have to say a special word of congratulations to Briege
Corkery on her recent sportswoman of the year award – a mammoth achievement for
an 18 year old".
Speaking about his role as a member of the selection committee for the Philips
Manager of the Year Welsh said, "I was pushing to have the Cork ladies selected
but my fellow judges chose the Irish cricket team. Shame on them. But I’m sure
manager Mary Collins and coach Eamon Ryan won’t mind that much with all they
achieved last year".
Ed Petit, Regional Sales Manager for Smart Telecom spoke of how their
sponsorship deal with Cork ladies football has created a fantastic profile and
that they were delighted to be renewing it for a further twelve months.
"After claiming the league crown you went on to win your first senior
All-Ireland and we are very proud of all your achievements from underage to
senior.
"We’re looking forward to another successful year of partnership with the
organization. Cork is a very important market to us and we are thrilled to be
sponsoring such a vibrant selection of talented young sports people", he added.
MC, county secretary Sharon O’Keeffe did a tremendous job on the night, keeping
the speeches brief and ensuring the smooth running of a large number of
presentations.
The Ian Hendrix Band were sublime on the night and a sing song followed as
always from the senior panel.
What a year to remember.
